Description
Sound Innovations: Ensemble Development for Intermediate Concert Band is a valuable resource for helping your students grow in their understanding and abilities as ensemble musicians. It contains 412 exercises, including more than 70 chorales by some of today's most renowned concert band composers. An assortment of exercises is grouped by key and presented in a variety of intermediate difficulty levels. Where possible, several exercises in the same category are provided to allow variety, while still accomplishing the goals of that specific type of exercise. You will notice that many exercises and chorales are clearly marked with dynamics, articulations, style, and tempo for students to practice those aspects of performance. Other exercises are intentionally left flexible for the teacher to determine how best to use them in facilitating and addressing the needs and goals of their ensemble. Whether your students are progressing through exercises to better their technical facility, or challenging their musicianship with beautiful chorales, this book can be used after any band method or as a supplement to performance music. Contains chorales composed by Roland Barrett, Andrew Boysen, Ralph Ford, Rossano Galante, Robert Sheldon, Todd Stalter, Randall Standridge, and Michael Story. The Ensemble Development Series is also available for Young Band and Advanced Band. Learn more at www.alfred.com/SIED.

Why we love this

This book treats ensemble development as a craft, not a checklist. The mix of 412 varied exercises organized by key and difficulty level means you can target exactly what your second clarinet section needs without resorting to generic warm-ups, while the 70+ chorales from composers like Robert Sheldon and Andrew Boysen elevate daily rehearsal into genuine musical study. The flexibility built into unmarked exercises gives you space to shape tone and phrasing to your ensemble's specific sound.

What to expect

This book balances work with reward. Technical passages keep the fingers engaged and the mind precise, but the chorales breathe with the character of accomplished concert band composers, giving second clarinet the chance to voice inner harmony lines that anchor the ensemble's sound. The exercises feel purposeful rather than obligatory.

Who it's for

Second clarinetists in intermediate concert bands who are building secure harmonic awareness and ensemble listening skills. This part book works for students transitioning from their primary method into sustained ensemble development, or as a supplement when your current performance repertoire needs targeted technical or musical reinforcement.

How to get the most out of it

  • Tackle chorales first when ensemble attention is fresh, then use technical exercises to reinforce the musicianship you just developed.
  • Rotate through different exercises in the same category rather than working through one type exhaustively; this variety sustains focus during repetition.
  • On marked exercises, have students identify the composer's indications before playing, turning notation into a conversation about musical intent rather than a list of instructions to follow.

How to use it

Assign exercises aligned with the keys you're rehearsing in your performance music, so technical gains transfer directly to repertoire. Use chorales as musical breaks within dense rehearsal blocks, or slot them into the final minutes of rehearsal when ensemble focus is running thin but musicianship matters most. The book's range of difficulty levels makes it scalable through a full season of programming.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing dynamics and articulations across multiple stylistic contexts
  • Building harmonic awareness and inner voice listening through chorale study
  • Technical facility across intermediate key signatures and interval patterns
  • Ensemble balance and blend when layered with other instrumental parts
  • Responding to tempo and style markings with appropriate musical phrasing
  • Sight-reading fluency through steady exposure to varied exercise formats
