Description
Sound Innovations: Ensemble Development for Intermediate Concert Band is a valuable resource for helping your students grow in their understanding and abilities as ensemble musicians. It contains 412 exercises, including more than 70 chorales by some of today's most renowned concert band composers. An assortment of exercises is grouped by key and presented in a variety of intermediate difficulty levels. Where possible, several exercises in the same category are provided to allow variety, while still accomplishing the goals of that specific type of exercise. You will notice that many exercises and chorales are clearly marked with dynamics, articulations, style, and tempo for students to practice those aspects of performance. Other exercises are intentionally left flexible for the teacher to determine how best to use them in facilitating and addressing the needs and goals of their ensemble. Whether your students are progressing through exercises to better their technical facility, or challenging their musicianship with beautiful chorales, this book can be used after any band method or as a supplement to performance music. Contains chorales composed by Roland Barrett, Andrew Boysen, Ralph Ford, Rossano Galante, Robert Sheldon, Todd Stalter, Randall Standridge, and Michael Story. The Ensemble Development Series is also available for Young Band and Advanced Band. Learn more at www.alfred.com/SIED.

Why we love this

This book strikes an intentional balance between structured technical work and genuine musicianship. The 412 exercises progress logically by key and difficulty, but the inclusion of 70+ chorales by respected composers like Robert Sheldon, Andrew Boysen, and Michael Story ensures that students experience music that matters, not just drills. You'll appreciate the flexibility built into the design: clearly marked exercises for specific performance goals, paired with open-ended exercises that invite your teaching judgment about phrasing, dynamics, and interpretation.

What to expect

Purposeful and rewarding. The exercises build competence gradually, so students experience progress with each key and difficulty level. The chorales by today's leading composers bring genuine artistry into the practice routine, transforming what could be rote work into moments of real musicianship and connection to the ensemble sound.

Who it's for

Intermediate concert band clarinet players who are ready to deepen their technical foundation and musical responsibility within the ensemble. This book serves clarinetists in middle school through early high school programs, or any intermediate student building toward more sophisticated ensemble literature.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through exercises in the same key family before moving to a new tonality; this deepens intonation security and reduces the cognitive load of learning new fingering patterns simultaneously.
  • Use the chorales as benchmarks for musicianship rather than speed. Return to them throughout the year to measure growth in tone quality, dynamic control, and blend with ensemble colleagues.
  • When an exercise is left unmarked for dynamics and articulation, use that flexibility to isolate one aspect of playing at a time. Play through once for rhythm and pitch accuracy, then revisit it to add interpretive choices.
  • Pair exercises from different sections to build endurance and variety within a single rehearsal. Moving between technical work and a chorale prevents fatigue and keeps engagement high.

How to use it

Deploy this book as your primary resource for sectional rehearsals and individual practice throughout the year. Assign exercises by key to prepare students for upcoming repertoire, or use chorales as warm-ups that reinforce tone production and dynamic awareness before full-band rehearsal begins. It works seamlessly as a supplement to your performance music or as the foundation for a band program building its technical and musical fundamentals from scratch.

Skills your students will build

  • Facility across all intermediate keys and tonalities
  • Dynamic and articulation control with specific musical intent
  • Intonation stability within harmonic contexts
  • Phrase shaping and musical phrasing in ensemble settings
  • Blend and balance awareness through chorale singing
  • Sight-reading fluency across varied exercise types
  • Stylistic understanding through music by multiple composers
