Description

Why we love this

Sound Innovations stands apart because it was built from real classroom feedback across thousands of teachers. The clean page design and carefully sequenced progression mean your trumpet students spend their time building genuine fluency rather than wrestling with poorly paced material. The online platform transforms home practice from isolation into active learning, with adjustable accompaniment tracks that let students slow down the tricky passages without losing the rhythmic groove.

What to expect

Deliberate and encouraging. Every exercise has a purpose, and students feel that structure. The variety of musical styles prevents the boredom that can creep into early method books, while the note-naming freedom in the staff pushes active reading from day one.

Who it's for

This book serves trumpet students at the very beginning of their wind band journey. It works equally well in heterogeneous class settings where students progress at different rates, thanks to its clear leveling system and the flexibility of SI Online to provide differentiated practice materials.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use SI Online's variable playback features to slow down accompaniment tracks by 10, 15% for passages where articulation or fingering coordination needs work; students often nail rhythm faster when they control the tempo.
  • Isolate the specific technical challenge in each exercise before playing it with the track. Have students mouth the fingering on the valves while listening to the recording first.
  • Rotate between playing the written melody and listening to the trumpet part on SI Online to build independence from the recording before ensemble rehearsals.
  • Build accountability by having students circle exercises they struggled with on their own, then revisit them the next practice session rather than skipping forward.

How to use it

Use this as your primary text for all first-year trumpet students in concert band. The six-level structure maps neatly onto a school year; students completing Level 3 by winter can begin performing simple full-band pieces at your holiday concert, while those progressing through Level 5 or 6 by spring tackle more substantial arrangements.

Skills your students will build

  • Recognizing notes on the staff without printed note names
  • Playing from concert D upward through the first octave plus
  • Reading whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes
  • Counting and executing time signatures (primarily 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4)
  • Performing quarter note and eighth note rhythmic patterns with accuracy
  • Sustaining notes with consistent air support
  • Interpreting dynamics (p, mf, f) and articulation markings
  • Playing melodic lines in multiple musical styles
