Robert Sheldon ranks among today's most frequently performed composers in the wind band repertoire. He serves as lead author of Sound Innovations for Concert Band, a widely used educational resource. His compositions have earned recognition from the American School Band Director's Association, Phi Beta Mu, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. These works resonate with performers and listeners through their expressive depth and are heard in concert halls and competitions across the globe.
Sheldon maintains an active schedule accepting commissions and producing numerous publications for concert band annually. He regularly appears as a guest conductor for All-State and Regional Honor Bands, and works extensively as a clinician at colleges, universities, and state music education conferences. His conducting and educational work has taken him throughout North America and internationally to Japan, Canada, Italy, Germany, Australia, and China. Notable performance venues for his compositions include Carnegie Hall in New York, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Boston's Symphony Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
In July 2020, VanderCook College of Music awarded Sheldon an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contributions to music education and composition.

Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education from the National Association for Music Education and Music For All. Dr. Boonshaft has received official recognition from five state governors, a Certificate of Appreciation from former President Ronald Reagan, and has performed for multiple U.S. Presidents and Margaret Thatcher. His academic honors include membership in Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Chi, the University of Hartford's Outstanding Music Educator Award (received twice), three National Endowment for the Arts "Artist in Residence" selections, and the Al G. Wright Award of Distinction from Women Band Directors International.
Beyond his formal positions, Dr. Boonshaft founded and directed both the Pennsylvania Youth Honors Concert Band and the Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble.
