He serves as lead author of Sound Innovations for Concert Band and has built an international reputation for music that connects powerfully with both performers and listeners. His compositions appear regularly on concert programs and competition lists worldwide.
His accolades include awards from the American School Band Director's Association, Phi Beta Mu, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Sheldon maintains an active commissioning schedule and releases numerous new concert band publications annually. In 2020, VanderCook College of Music honored him with a doctorate degree.

Additional honors include membership in Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Chi, the University of Hartford's Regent's Award (twice), and three selections as a National Endowment for the Arts Artist in Residence.
