About the Authors
Robert Sheldon stands among today's most widely performed composers of wind band music. He serves as lead author of Sound Innovations for Concert Band, a foundational educational series. His compositions have earned recognition from the American School Band Director's Association, Phi Beta Mu, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
Sheldon's works are performed globally and regularly appear on international concert and competition programs. He maintains an active commission schedule while producing numerous publications for concert band annually. His compositions have been heard at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Orchestra Hall, Symphony Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
As a guest conductor, clinician, and educator, Sheldon frequently leads All-State and Regional Honor Bands while delivering presentations at colleges, universities, and state music education conferences. Recognized as an engaging speaker and conductor, he has been invited to present and lead ensembles throughout the United States and internationally.
His contributions to music education have earned him widespread recognition. He received the inaugural George M. Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education from the National Association for Music Education and Music For All. Additional honors include membership in Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Chi, the University of Hartford's Outstanding Music Educator Award and Regent's Award (received twice), and three appointments as a National Endowment for the Arts "Artist in Residence." He has also been selected three times for Honorary Life Membership in the Tri-M Music Honor Society and received the Al G. Wright Award of Distinction from Women Band Directors International.
Boonshaft holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, a Master of Music Education in Conducting, and a Bachelor of Music (Summa Cum Laude). He is Professor Emeritus of Music at Hofstra University, where he was selected for the Center for Scholarly Research and Academic Excellence, and previously taught at the University of Hartford and Moravian College. Early in his career, he founded and directed both the Pennsylvania Youth Honors Concert Band and the Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble.
