Description

Why we love this

This method reflects genuine classroom experience from thousands of teachers rather than theoretical assumptions about how beginners learn. The clean page design and clear exercise objectives make it easy for alto saxophone players to focus on one skill at a time, and the progression through six distinct levels gives you concrete benchmarks for measuring student advancement and knowing exactly when to move forward.

What to expect

The progression feels purposeful and manageable. New concepts arrive gradually, supported by reinforcement exercises and varied musical styles that keep practice engaging rather than repetitive. The absence of note names on the staff encourages genuine reading growth instead of reliance on printed guides.

Who it's for

Beginning alto saxophone players in concert band settings who benefit from a structured, visually clear approach to fundamentals. This book works well for middle school and high school students in their first year on the instrument, as well as adult learners starting band.

How to get the most out of it

  • Slow the accompaniment tracks to match the student's current tempo, then gradually increase speed as accuracy improves; this removes the pressure of keeping up with a fixed recording.
  • Use SI Online's alternate melodies to refresh familiar pieces and maintain engagement when students need extra repetition on a particular skill.
  • Lock in the concert B-flat starting note early in each lesson so students internalize the fingering before adding the challenge of reading new material.
  • Encourage students to work through the evaluation criteria listed at the end of each level before advancing; self-assessment builds independence and honesty about readiness.

How to use it

Start all your beginning alto saxophones through Libro 1 during the fall semester so everyone enters winter concert season at the same foundational level. The six-level structure maps naturally onto your school calendar, with each level taking roughly 3-4 weeks; use the evaluation criteria to determine advancement timing rather than a fixed schedule.

Skills your students will build

  • Treble clef reading without note name dependencies
  • Concert B-flat fingering and embouchure control in the lower and middle register
  • Rhythm reading across simple and compound meters
  • Breath control and phrase shaping in short melodic lines
  • Listening and matching pitch with recorded accompaniments
  • Self-evaluation using progress benchmarks and performance criteria
