About the Arranger: Mark Hayes

Mark Hayes is a prolific arranger and composer with more than 1,750 published works spanning sacred music, choral literature, orchestral works, and piano repertoire. Trained at Baylor University with a degree in Piano Performance, he has guest conducted at Lincoln Center, the National Cathedral, and Carnegie Hall, and received the Award for Exemplary Leadership in Christian Music from Baylor's Center for Christian Music Studies in 2010.
Beyond his work as a concert pianist and conductor, Hayes has established himself as a skilled orchestrator and record producer. He premiered his Requiem at Lincoln Center in 2013 and again at St. Ignatius Basilica in Rome as part of the Vatican-sponsored Festival Pro Musica E Arte Sacra. His arrangements and compositions span genres from classical and sacred to gospel, jazz, and Broadway, all created from his home base in Kansas City, Missouri.
Why we love this
Hayes brings the skill of a master pianist to these folk arrangements, crafting accompaniments that honor each song's character while providing singers with genuinely pianistic support. The collection spans fourteen enduring folk standards, giving you real programming flexibility without requiring multiple books. A Federation Festivals selection means these pieces are vetted for both contest and recital use.
What to expect
These arrangements strike a balance between folk simplicity and concert sophistication. Each song retains its narrative heart and emotional directness while gaining harmonic depth and pianistic texture that elevates the material for the recital hall.
Who it's for
Solo singers preparing recital programs or festival submissions will find authentic, concert-ready arrangements of beloved folk material. This collection suits singers of all ages looking for American roots repertoire that connects with audiences while remaining musically substantive.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the vocal line so it sits forward of the piano part; Hayes's accompaniments are full and textured, so encouraging singers to sing with clear projection prevents the melody from disappearing.
- Honor the folk origins of each song by avoiding excessive vibrato on longer notes; let the natural shape of the melody breathe.
- Work through the piano score carefully before rehearsing with the singer, since several arrangements contain independent harmonic movement that requires precise coordination.
- Adjust tempo based on the acoustic of your performance space; these songs often benefit from slightly slower tempos in resonant halls.
How to use it
Build a thematic recital around American folk tradition using selections from this collection, or scatter individual songs throughout a varied program to add warmth and accessibility. The variety of tempos and moods makes it easy to create balanced program flow.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining legit vocal tone while singing with folk authenticity
- Coordinating with a pianist across varied harmonic accompaniments
- Shaping phrases in narrative folk songs with clear diction and storytelling intent
- Sight-reading from a piano/vocal score with minimal preparation time
