About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later honored with the Distinguished Alumni award. His career spans both the publishing industry, where he spent eight years managing rights and licenses and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America, and composition, with more than 800 choral works now in print across all difficulty levels.
As a writer member of ASCAP, Althouse is a frequent recipient of the ASCAP Special Award for his contributions to standard music repertoire. Beyond his compositions, he has compiled and arranged numerous vocal solo collections, co-written children's musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, and authored several educational resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. His collaborative work on I Hear America Singing was performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Barack Obama's 2009 Inauguration. Althouse currently serves on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America and contributes articles to its quarterly publication.
Why we love this
Althouse's arrangements of these 14 American folk standards strike a balance between accessibility and genuine artistry. The collection spans songs that work equally well for audition programs and recitals, and the inclusion of three master arrangers means each piece receives thoughtful, singable treatment rather than generic piano reduction.
What to expect
These songs carry the warmth and directness of American vernacular music, rooted in ballads, spirituals, and work songs. The piano writing supports rather than decorates the voice, creating intimate space for the story each song tells.
Who it's for
Solo singers preparing recital programs, competition repertoire, or auditions will find genuine concert material here at medium high tessiture. This collection serves vocalists who want authentic folk arrangements that don't sacrifice musical integrity for simplicity.
How to get the most out of it
- Pay attention to the piano part's melodic dialogue, particularly in pieces like The Water Is Wide, where the accompaniment often carries thematic material that deserves clear projection alongside the voice.
- Shape the lyrics with the language's natural rhythm rather than fighting against the musical line; folk idiom rewards storytelling honesty over technique.
- Honor the cultural and historical weight of spirituals like Poor Wayfaring Stranger and Follow the Drinking Gourd, allowing space for their emotional depth without oversinging.
How to use it
Build a standalone folk song recital, or intersperse individual pieces throughout a mixed program to add variety and audience connection. The range of moods and styles makes it easy to program contextually, whether you're pairing spirituals for a thematic concert or selecting single pieces for diverse programming.
Skills your students will build
- Phrasing and legit singing in folk idiom without oversinging
- Interpretation of spirituals and work songs with cultural awareness
- Collaboration with piano accompanist through active listening to countermelodies and harmonic support
- Diction in American English across varied regional and historical contexts
- Musical storytelling and character in solo recital contexts
