About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was honored as a Distinguished Alumni recipient. His career spans composition, publishing administration, and music education; he spent eight years managing rights and licenses for a major educational publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. As a composer, Althouse has over 800 choral works in print and maintains active membership in ASCAP, receiving regular recognition through the ASCAP Special Award.
Beyond composition, Althouse has established himself as a compiler and arranger of vocal collections, notably Folk Songs for Solo Singers and I Hear America Singing, the latter co-written with his wife Sally K. Albrecht and performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration. He has authored and co-written numerous classroom resources, including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book, Accent on Composers, and reproducible materials for music instruction. Althouse currently serves on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America and resides in North Carolina.
Why we love this
Althouse's arrangements honor the melodic integrity of these folk classics while crafting piano parts that support rather than overshadow the singer. Each song sits comfortably in a medium-high range, allowing performers to access this essential American repertoire without forcing their voices into uncomfortable registers. The collection spans multiple folk traditions and moods, making it equally valuable for a recital spanning an entire program or for selecting individual pieces that fit your student's artistic voice.
What to expect
These arrangements preserve the storytelling directness of folk tradition while enriching it with thoughtful harmonic context. The piano accompaniment feels conversational rather than elaborate, creating space for the human voice to carry the emotional weight of each narrative.
Who it's for
This collection serves singers preparing for recitals or festivals who want authentic folk material arranged accessibly. Solo singers at the advancing intermediate through early advanced level will find pieces that sit well in their range while offering interpretive depth and musical substance.
How to get the most out of it
- Study the piano part independently first. These arrangements contain harmonic and rhythmic details that anchor your interpretation and clarify the song's emotional arc.
- Pay attention to the text underlay and any dynamic markings Althouse includes. Folk songs often benefit from storytelling clarity, and the arranger's choices guide you toward interpretive coherence.
- Balance your vibrato with the arrangement's texture. Some songs sit sparsely accompanied, where a wide vibrato draws attention beautifully; others need steadier tone to blend with richer harmonies.
- Work through any tempo variations early. Many of these arrangements use subtle tempo shifts to shape phrase meaning, and coordinating with your accompanist requires clear communication.
How to use it
Build a cohesive recital around thematically linked selections from this collection; pairing ballads like "He's Gone Away" with work songs like "Follow the Drinking Gourd" creates historical and emotional resonance. This collection works particularly well for younger singers building their recital repertoire or for programming alongside other art song traditions at a student showcase or festival.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining legit tone across longer phrases in ballad literature
- Interpreting text with musical intention in English-language song
- Collaborating with an accompanist using clear ensemble cues
- Understanding American folk traditions and historical context of traditional songs
- Navigating varied harmonic language from simple triadic to more chromatic arrangements
