About the Arranger: Mark Hayes

Mark Hayes has established himself as a prolific arranger and composer with over 1,750 published works spanning sacred music, choral literature, orchestrations, and solo repertoire. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude in Piano Performance from Baylor University (1975) and has guest conducted at Lincoln Center, the National Cathedral, and Carnegie Hall. His honors include the 2010 Award for Exemplary Leadership in Christian Music from Baylor University, and his Requiem received its world premiere at Lincoln Center in 2013 and was subsequently performed at St. Ignatius Basilica in Rome as part of a Vatican-sponsored festival.
Beyond his conducting and large-scale compositions, Hayes is deeply committed to the piano repertoire, with over 100 piano books in print covering genres from gospel and classical to jazz and Broadway. His work as an accomplished orchestrator and record producer reflects his versatility across musical styles. Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Hayes continues to compose and arrange with a focus on creating accessible, beautiful music for performers of all levels.
Why we love this
Hayes brings an arranger's gift for clarity and singability to these beloved American folk songs. Each arrangement sits comfortably in the medium-high range while maintaining the authentic character of the melodies, and the piano writing supports the voice without overwhelming it, making this collection ideal for singers building confidence with traditional repertoire.
What to expect
These arrangements inhabit the heartland of American folk tradition, evoking stories of hardship, journeys, love, and resilience without sentimentality. The vocal lines sit naturally in the voice, supported by Hayes's warmly harmonic piano accompaniments that feel both rooted in tradition and refreshingly contemporary.
Who it's for
Solo singers preparing recital programs, auditions, or festival performances will find immediate value in this curated collection of 14 folk standards arranged for comfortable singability. Intermediate to advanced vocalists seeking American repertoire with strong melodic bones and supportive piano arrangements can draw from this book for years of recital programming.
How to get the most out of it
- Allow the folk melodies to breathe naturally; resist the temptation to oversing these songs. The beauty lies in their simplicity and directness.
- Use the piano accompaniment as a guide for phrasing and breath placement rather than an obstacle. Hayes's writing often suggests where vocal phrases can rest or overlap with harmonic movement.
- Pay attention to dynamic contrast across the collection. These 14 songs span different moods and stories; let the arc of each piece shape your interpretation rather than treating them as uniform folk songs.
- Work closely with your accompanist on balance. The piano part is integral but never intrusive; your voices should remain clearly heard while the harmonic support creates emotional depth.
How to use it
Program selections from this collection as anchors for recitals exploring American identity or heritage themes, pairing them with art songs or other vocal genres to create compelling thematic arcs. These songs also work beautifully as encore material or as centerpieces for concert programs celebrating folk traditions within a mixed-repertoire recital.
Skills your students will build
- Phrasing and breath management in folk idioms
- Text interpretation and storytelling through song
- Sight reading and learning from diverse tune sources within one volume
- Balance and blend with piano accompaniment
- Understanding harmonic support for vocal line independence
