About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later honored as a Distinguished Alumnus. His career in music publishing spanned eight years, during which he served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America, providing him deep knowledge of how educational music reaches teachers and students.
As a composer, Althouse has created more than 800 choral works performed across the English-speaking world and maintains membership in ASCAP, receiving their Special Award multiple times. Beyond composing, he has compiled and edited numerous vocal solo collections, co-authored pedagogical resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers, and served the folk music community through the Folk Art Society of America's National Advisory Board. His collaborative work with his wife Sally K. Albrecht includes children's musicals and I Hear America Singing, performed at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs.
Why we love this
This collection showcases three of Alfred Music's most respected vocal arrangers working at their best, and the diversity of their approaches keeps each song fresh and singable. Althouse's hand in this book brings the practical sensibility of someone who understands what soloists actually need: arrangements that sit comfortably in the voice, support the song's emotional core, and sound polished without requiring orchestral accompaniment.
What to expect
These arrangements honor the simplicity and emotional directness of folk songs while surrounding them with sophisticated harmonic support. Each piece invites you into a narrative, from the spiritual yearning of Poor Wayfaring Stranger to the spirited energy of Camptown Races, without ever feeling precious or overly arranged.
Who it's for
Medium-high soloists preparing recital or festival performances, including classical singers who want to explore American folk repertoire with the support of thoughtful, singable arrangements. Voice teachers seeking accessible yet artistically rewarding material that bridges traditional song craft with contemporary choral writing standards will find reliable options throughout this collection.
How to get the most out of it
- Study the piano part first to understand the harmonic language and emotional arc; many of these arrangements contain subtle accompaniment touches that enhance the text-painting.
- Let the stories embedded in these songs breathe. Folk material thrives on honesty, so focus on communication over technical display.
- Build familiarity with the full collection to identify which keys and moods complement each other if programming multiple selections on a single recital.
- Use the variety of tempos and characters across the 14 songs to shape the overall pacing and emotional journey of your set.
How to use it
Build a standalone folk recital drawing from multiple selections, or use individual songs to anchor thematic programs exploring American identity, social movements, or the immigrant experience. These arrangements also work beautifully as encore material or as bridges between classical and contemporary repertoire in a mixed recital.
Skills your students will build
- Singing with clarity and authenticity in American folk idioms
- Interpreting text-based narratives across varied cultural contexts
- Collaborating with a pianist to balance solo line with accompaniment voices
- Building recital programs that maintain audience connection through stylistic variety
- Understanding the harmonic depth that skilled arrangement adds to simple melodies
