About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse studied music education and musicology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he later received the Distinguished Alumni award. His career spans both publishing and composition; he spent eight years in rights and licenses administration at a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. As a composer, Althouse has over 800 choral works in print and maintains active membership in ASCAP, receiving regular Special Awards for his contributions to standard music.
Beyond composition, Althouse has compiled and arranged numerous respected vocal solo collections and co-authored widely-used choral resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. He collaborated with his wife Sally K. Albrecht on children's musicals and on "I Hear America Singing," performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration. Althouse served on the board of the North Carolina Master Chorale and currently advises the Folk Art Society of America, having contributed scholarly articles to the society's quarterly periodical.
Why we love this
These fourteen arrangements honor the core melody and emotional truth of each folk song while remaining vocally approachable for soloists working at medium-low tessituras. The pairing of Althouse, Mark Hayes, and Ruth Elaine Schram ensures stylistic variety and consistent craftsmanship across the collection, making it equally valuable for recital preparation and festival competition.
What to expect
These arrangements capture the rural and spiritual roots of American folk song without affectation. The piano writing honors both the simplicity and emotional depth of the melodies; you'll find moments of sparse, almost hymnic clarity alongside richer harmonic colors that deepen the storytelling without overpowering the voice.
Who it's for
This collection serves intermediate to advanced soloists performing in recitals or festival competitions, particularly singers with lower vocal ranges seeking authentic folk material arranged with musical substance. It is also appropriate for voice students preparing a diverse solo repertoire that spans American folk tradition.
How to get the most out of it
- Allow the piano part to breathe during introductions and interludes; these gestures establish the emotional landscape for each song and deserve clear phrasing.
- Attend to the storytelling arc within each arrangement. Many of these folk narratives carry weight in their lyrics; find the human particulars that make each verse distinct rather than treating verses as repetition.
- Balance textural clarity with legit vocal tone. The medium-low range sits comfortably for many singers, but avoid oversinging or forcing projection when the arrangement calls for intimacy.
How to use it
Build a recital set around several of these songs to create a coherent folk program, or intersperse individual selections among art songs and classical repertoire to provide stylistic contrast. These pieces work particularly well in community concert settings or educational performances where the audience connection to folk narrative matters as much as technical display.
Skills your students will build
- Legit vocal tone production and breath management across extended phrases
- Expressive interpretation of narrative text and emotional subtext
- Collaboration with a pianist through clear musical communication and ensemble listening
- Stylistic awareness of American folk idiom and regional vocal characteristics
- Confidence performing unaccompanied or with minimal accompaniment textures
