About This Collection
Description
Alfred's Basic Piano Library supplementary books give your students targeted practice and engaging material beyond the core method books. The Notespeller series by Gayle Kowalchyk (Books 1A, 1B, and 2) builds note-reading fluency at each level, while the Flash Cards for Levels 1A & 1B provide quick daily reinforcement. You'll also find seasonal and contemporary repertoire, from Willard A. Palmer's Merry Christmas! books to arrangements of popular and patriotic material.
Highlights
Teachers keep coming back to Gayle Kowalchyk's Notespeller books across all early levels—they're the workhorses for note-reading practice. The Flash Cards for Levels 1A & 1B (created by Palmer, Manus, Lethco, and Gerou) work well for warm-ups or progress checks. Willard A. Palmer's Merry Christmas! books bring seasonal repertoire into the studio without slowing down early-level students.
Composer & Author Spotlight
Gayle Kowalchyk holds degrees in piano performance from Ohio University and Northwestern University, and earned an Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University. She currently teaches class piano and piano pedagogy at California State University, Northridge, and her Notespeller books remain the standard supplementary tool for early-level note reading.
Willard A. Palmer was a prolific composer and educator who wrote nearly 800 published works across piano, guitar, accordion, and choral music. His contributions to Alfred's Basic Piano Library span from flash cards to seasonal repertoire, and his materials remain widely used in studios today.
Amanda Vick Lethco co-authored the entire Alfred's Basic Piano Library method alongside Palmer and Manus. A Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, she studied with renowned teachers including James Friskin at Juilliard and Douglas Moore at Columbia University, bringing rigorous pedagogical thinking to every supplementary title.
