Alfred's Basic Prep Course, Levels A through F, was written to answer a demand for a course of piano study designed specifically for students who are five years old and up. This course offers a careful introduction of fundamentals, music that fits comfortably under the young student's normal hand span, plus constant reinforcement--all leading to results beyond those generated by other piano methods. After Lesson Book B, the student may progress to Prep Course, Lesson Book C or choose to go directly into the faster paced Level 1B of Alfred's Basic Piano Library. The complete Prep Course consists of six books (Levels A through F).

About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who created an impressive catalog of 789 published compositions. His works span accordion, piano, guitar, and organ methods alongside numerous solo pieces and choral arrangements, many of which have been published in German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's musical gifts emerged early; he performed piano on radio broadcasts at age 13 and went on to study both piano and accordion under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique helped develop his improvisational skills. His college years at Whitworth College and Millsaps College included regular radio performances and ensemble work. Following his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, he earned a two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany and later completed post-graduate work at the University of Houston, where he joined the faculty.
At the University of Houston, Palmer taught the first successful college accordion courses for 18 years and established himself as a preeminent authority on Baroque music ornamentation through meticulous scholarly research. This expertise became the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. His significant contributions to musicological research earned him a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. A director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, he held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians (Local #65), the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. Armed with a business degree from City College of New York and skills in clarinet and piano, Morty transformed Alfred Music from a popular sheet music publisher into an educational powerhouse.
During the 1950s, Manus spearheaded the company's reinvention by developing instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. This shift toward quality music education materials positioned Alfred Music as a leader in the field. Under his leadership, the company expanded dramatically over the following decades, prompting a relocation of headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 and a move of distribution operations to upstate New York.
