Alfred's Basic Piano Library: Technic Books

Teachers keep coming back to the Technic Book 1A by Palmer, Manus, and Lethco as their entry point for early elementary students. The 1B and level 2 volumes follow naturally as students progress, each building on the previous level's finger patterns and scales. These books remain popular across studio and school settings because they're designed to work as companions to the method books, not as standalone materials.

Willard A. Palmer was a prolific composer and pedagogue who authored 789 published works across multiple instruments, including piano methods, guitar, accordion, and choral music. His Technic Book 1A remains one of the most adopted early piano resources in the country, a testament to his understanding of how young hands develop technique.

Amanda Vick Lethco co-authored the entire Alfred's Basic Piano Library with Palmer and Manus, bringing her expertise as a Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin. She studied at Juilliard and the Chicago Musical College, and her pedagogical voice shaped how generations of young pianists approach scales, finger independence, and hand position.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing from 1952 to 2016, stewarding a company founded in 1922 that began in New York's Tin Pan Alley. Beyond his business leadership, Manus was instrumental in shaping the Alfred's Basic Piano Library alongside Palmer and Lethco, helping establish it as a foundational method series.
