Why we love this

This book transforms daily warm-up time into a structured pathway for building genuine ensemble musicianship. Rather than cycling through generic long tones, your students work through carefully sequenced exercises that target specific listening and balance skills, then apply them immediately to chorales written by some of today's most respected young band composers. The progression from five-note scales to full diatonic harmony gives every rehearsal a clear objective and visible growth.

What to expect

Clean, purposeful, and musical from the first exercise. The progression respects what beginning players can accomplish while refusing to settle for mechanical playing. Chorales by established composers elevate even simple five-note scales into moments of genuine musicality.

Who it's for

Beginning band students working at grade 1 through 1.5 level, regardless of which method book your program uses. This supplement works equally well in middle school general classes, community band programs, and youth ensembles where ensemble balance and intonation demand focused, efficient rehearsal time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Assign one exercise type per week rather than rotating daily. Students build ownership and muscle memory when they can track their own improvement on pitch matching or chord builders across multiple rehearsals.
  • Use the chorales as informal sectional assessment tools. Have each section sing or sustain their part while you listen for intonation tendencies that the exercises should address next.
  • Rotate who leads the pitch matching exercises. A student-led warm-up builds ear training for the entire section and removes the pressure of constant director correction.

How to use it

Reserve the first 8, 10 minutes of every rehearsal for these exercises, moving through one category per week or every two weeks depending on your ensemble's pace. The systematic organization lets you address specific intonation or balance issues that emerge in your performance repertoire, then reinforce the fix through targeted exercises before moving back into concert music.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining long tones with consistent pitch and tone quality
  • Matching pitch with section members in unison and within chord structures
  • Reading scales in multiple keys (5-note, 6-note, and 8-note)
  • Understanding interval relationships and chord construction
  • Responding to harmonic context and balancing within moving chord progressions
  • Subdividing rhythms accurately within ensemble settings
  • Sight-reading simple chorale literature with musicality and phrasing
