Why we love this

This systematic approach to ensemble development fills rehearsal time with musicianship work that actually sticks. Rather than treating technical drills as separate from musical learning, the progression from long tones and interval builders through full chorales by recognized composers keeps students engaged while building the listening and balancing skills they need. The 167 exercises let you target exactly what your ensemble needs on any given day.

What to expect

Warm and accessible. The progression from simple long tones to genuine musical moments in the chorales creates a sense of accomplishment and ownership. Students hear themselves improve within a single rehearsal, which builds confidence in young players who are still uncertain about their abilities.

Who it's for

Beginning band flute and oboe players working through their first year or two of ensemble experience. This book works for students at grades 1, 1.5, and early 2 levels who need structured, daily work on foundational ensemble skills before moving into standard concert repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Assign each student a specific chorale to listen to before rehearsal so they arrive with a sense of the harmonic context. This cuts warmup time and improves their ability to match pitch within the ensemble.
  • Start with the long tone and passing the tonic exercises before tackling any new key. These lay the foundation for intonation in the scale work that follows.
  • Use the scale canons to develop independent playing. Have sections or individuals take the lead while others follow, rotating roles frequently so everyone practices listening and adjusting.
  • Move through the chorales at a deliberate tempo. Rushing through them defeats the purpose; use silence between phrases to let students hear what they just played together.

How to use it

Use these exercises during the first fifteen minutes of rehearsal as your standing warmup and ensemble-building curriculum. The book's organization by key lets you align exercises with whatever performance music you're preparing, so students reinforce intonation and balance in the exact key signature they'll see in their concert piece that week.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone control and air support consistency
  • Pitch matching and collective intonation within chord structures
  • Reading and playing in various key signatures (grades 1, 1.5, 2)
  • Interval recognition and accurate interval playing
  • Part independence within harmonic progressions
  • Listening for balance and blend in a section
  • Rhythmic subdivision awareness (16th notes, triplets, etc.)
  • Sustaining musical phrases with proper phrasing and breath placement
