Description
Chop-Monster is a sequential jazz improvisation method by acclaimed jazz pianist and educator Shelly Berg that utilizes a "call-and-response" approach: students listen to a jazz idea, imitate it until it is internalized, and then "try it on their own." In Chop-Monster 1, students will hear and improvise to the Ima7, iimi7, and V7 chords in the key of B-flat, plus a basic blues progression. In Chop-Monster 2 students will hear and improvise to the ii-V-I progression in three keys (concert B-flat, E-flat, F).

About the Author: Shelly Berg

Shelly Berg

Shelly Berg is a pianist, composer, and educator whose work spans jazz performance, film and television scoring, and orchestra arrangement. His orchestrations for major artists and studios (Kiss, Chicago, Warner Bros., Fox) showcase his command of harmony and instrumental color, while his Grammy-nominated recordings and appearances as a clinician throughout North America, Europe, and Asia have established him as a leading voice in jazz education. He currently directs the Jazz Studies program at USC's Thornton School of Music and served as Past President of the International Association for Jazz Education.

Berg's approach to teaching improvisation emerges from decades of professional performance and composing. Rather than abstract theory, he builds on the call-and-response tradition, the same method that shaped jazz language from its origins. His Chop-Monster series reflects his conviction that students internalize jazz by listening, imitating, and then experimenting within clear harmonic structures. This pedagogical philosophy has made his materials essential tools for high school and collegiate jazz programs.

Why we love this

This method cuts through the confusion many young flutists face when first encountering jazz harmony and improvisation. Berg's call-and-response model, reinforced by the included CD, transforms what could be intimidating chord progressions (Ima7, iimi7, V7, and blues) into patterns students can hear, repeat, and own. The sequential design means Book 1 stands alone as a complete foundation before advancing to the ii-V-I work in Book 2.

What to expect

Chop-Monster drops you into real jazz language from the start. The harmonic framework feels grounded and playable rather than theoretical; you're learning the sounds that actually appear in jazz standards and contemporary charts. The call-and-response rhythm creates a collaborative energy, as if you're trading phrases with an experienced musician who's patient, encouraging, and never rushing you forward.

Who it's for

This book serves flutists in high school and early collegiate jazz ensembles who are ready to move beyond reading jazz charts into generating their own lines. It works equally well for private studio instruction with an improvisation focus and for self-directed learners who need structured guidance and recorded models.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the CD multiple times before attempting to imitate. Let the phrase settle in your ear so your fingers can follow naturally rather than struggling through notation.
  • Record yourself improvising over the backing tracks and listen back. You'll hear rhythmic phrasing and intonation issues that rehearsal alone won't reveal.
  • Slow down the CD tracks using playback software if a tempo feels unstable. There's no shame in building comfort at a gentler pace before matching the recorded tempo.
  • Practice the call-and-response patterns outside the improvisation context. Isolate each harmonic idea and drill it as if you were learning a classical passage, then apply it during improvisation.

How to use it

Assign this book as core material for your jazz ensemble flutists during the first semester so they develop a common harmonic vocabulary before ensemble repertoire demands quick improvisation. The 40-page format fits well alongside large ensemble rehearsal, requiring only modest practice time at home. You might also use it as a placement or diagnostic tool: students who engage deeply with Book 1 are ready for more advanced improvisation studies.

Skills your students will build

  • Listening and imitating jazz phrasing and articulation
  • Improvising over Ima7, iimi7, and V7 chords in B-flat
  • Navigating a 12-bar blues progression
  • Internalizing harmonic progressions by ear before relying on written notation
  • Building confidence in spontaneous melodic generation within a harmonic context
