Description
Chop-Monster is a sequential jazz improvisation method by acclaimed jazz pianist and educator Shelly Berg that utilizes a "call-and-response" approach: students listen to a jazz idea, imitate it until it is internalized, and then "try it on their own." In Chop-Monster 1, students will hear and improvise to the Ima7, iimi7, and V7 chords in the key of B-flat, plus a basic blues progression. In Chop-Monster 2 students will hear and improvise to the ii-V-I progression in three keys (concert B-flat, E-flat, F).

About the Author: Shelly Berg

Shelly Berg

Shelly Berg is a pianist, composer, and bandleader whose command of the instrument is matched by his prolific work across jazz, television, and film. Dave Brubeck called him "a great jazz pianist who has a total command of his instrument," and the Los Angeles Times describes his playing as a powerhouse blend of hard-swinging lines and breakneck runs. His orchestrations have appeared in films for Warner Bros. and Fox, television scores for ABC, CBS, and HBO, and arrangements for major artists including Kiss and Chicago.

Berg serves as Chair of Jazz Studies at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California and has taught, performed, and conducted clinics across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Japan, and Israel. His published compositions for jazz ensemble and his pedagogical works, including the Chop-Monster improvisation series and Jazz Improvisation: The Goal-Note Method, have become essential tools in jazz education.

Why we love this

This book gives bass players a structured entry point into jazz improvisation without overwhelming them with harmonic complexity. Berg's call-and-response model lets students internalize jazz language the way musicians actually learn it: by ear, by repetition, and by playing, making it far more effective than pages of theory rules. The progression from simple triadic language in Book 1 to the ii-V-I progression in Book 2 mirrors how working musicians develop fluency.

What to expect

Stepping into Chop-Monster feels like having a mentor in the room. The call-and-response structure gives permission to imitate first and create second, building confidence through repetition before demanding originality. You're learning the syntax of jazz language at a manageable pace, trading one harmonic idea for another until your fingers remember it as naturally as speech.

Who it's for

This book is designed for jazz ensemble bass players who are ready to move beyond reading charts and want to develop functional improvisation skills. It works equally well for self-directed learning and for ensemble contexts where a director is guiding students through structured improvisation.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen repeatedly to the recorded phrase before attempting to play it back. Internalizing the melody, rhythm, and phrasing by ear builds the foundational listening skills that separate confident improvisers from hesitant ones.
  • Lock into the groove of the accompaniment track rather than rushing ahead. Jazz time lives in the pocket; your response should sit comfortably behind or within the beat, not chase it.
  • Transpose the learned phrases into different keys immediately after mastering them in B-flat. This transfer accelerates your ability to apply the same language in real playing situations.
  • Record yourself playing your own variations once you've learned the written phrases. Listening back reveals rhythmic inconsistencies and phrasing choices you can refine.

How to use it

Use this as the core improvisation curriculum for your jazz ensemble's rhythm section over the course of a semester or year. The sequential, cumulative design means students progress measurably, and the focus on specific harmonic environments (Ima7, iimi7, V7, and blues) gives them concrete, reproducible tools they can apply immediately in ensemble settings. Pair Book 1 with ensemble charts that emphasize these same chord qualities to reinforce what students are learning in their individual study.

Skills your students will build

  • Call-and-response listening and imitation in jazz language
  • Improvisation over Ima7, iimi7, and V7 chords in B-flat
  • Blues improvisation foundations
  • Internalization of jazz phrasing and rhythmic nuance through repetition
  • Foundation for ii-V-I progression study in Book 2
