Description
Chop-Monster is a sequential jazz improvisation method by acclaimed jazz pianist and educator Shelly Berg that utilizes a "call-and-response" approach: students listen to a jazz idea, imitate it until it is internalized, and then "try it on their own." In Chop-Monster 1, students will hear and improvise to the Ima7, iimi7, and V7 chords in the key of B-flat, plus a basic blues progression. In Chop-Monster 2 students will hear and improvise to the ii-V-I progression in three keys (concert B-flat, E-flat, F).

More about this title

About the Author: Shelly Berg

Shelly Berg

Shelly Berg commands the keyboard with a virtuoso's intensity and a bandleader's sensibility. A finalist in the 1988 Great American Jazz Piano Competition and the pianist and arranger for trombonist Bill Watrous, Berg has earned praise from Dave Brubeck himself for his total command of the instrument. His compositional reach extends from television (ABC's Fudge, CBS's A League of Their Own, HBO's Dennis Miller Millennium Special) to film (Warner Bros.' Almost Heroes and Three to Tango, Fox's Men of Honor) and orchestrations for acts including Kiss and Chicago.

At the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, where he chairs the Jazz Studies program, Berg has shaped generations of jazz musicians through both performance and pedagogy. His published works include numerous compositions for jazz ensemble and two landmark improvisation methods: the Chop-Monster series and Jazz Improvisation: The Goal-Note Method. He has served as Past President of the International Association for Jazz Education and maintains an active schedule as a clinician and guest artist across North America, Europe, and beyond.

Why we love this

Berg's call-and-response pedagogy cuts straight to what matters in jazz education: listening, internalizing, and creating. The trumpet 4 book presents achievable harmonic content (Imaj7, iim7, V7 chords plus blues) with the embedded CD providing authentic jazz models that students can imitate immediately, then personalize. It's a method that respects student ears and builds independence without drowning beginners in theory.

What to expect

Practical, grounded, and rewarding. You hear a jazz musician play an idea, you learn it inside your body, and suddenly you have agency to make it your own. The blues groove and bebop-adjacent harmony feel authentic to the jazz tradition, not simplified or academic.

Who it's for

Jazz students in secondary or college ensembles who are ready to begin improvisational study but need structured, attainable stepping stones. Trumpet 4 players fit into big band and small group settings where they can both absorb the method and apply it immediately in ensemble contexts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the recorded phrase multiple times before attempting to echo it back. Internalization comes from careful listening, not rushing into repetition.
  • Sing or hum the jazz idea on your horn before you try to play it cleanly. This bridges the gap between what your ear hears and what your fingers execute.
  • When you reach the 'try it on your own' section, start with the exact same rhythmic and melodic shape as the model, then make one small change at a time. Growth happens incrementally.
  • Use the CD as a steady practice partner. Replay phrases as many times as you need until they feel natural in your mouth, not just memorized.

How to use it

Integrate this into your jazz ensemble's regular warm-up rotation, especially before small group or combo work. It pairs naturally with full-ensemble repertoire at the same level, giving your trumpet section practical tools to voice figures and solo confidently within the band's context.

Skills your students will build

  • Ear-to-instrument translation (listening to a jazz phrase and reproducing it)
  • Imaj7, iim7, V7 harmonic recognition and improvisation
  • 12-bar blues progression (melody and harmony)
  • Call-and-response vocal thinking applied to jazz improvisation
  • Development of personal jazz vocabulary and phrasing through guided imitation
