Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips (b. 1953) is a composer, pedagogue, and conductor whose influence on string education spans decades. His innovative approach to large ensemble pedagogy and genre flexibility has shaped how thousands of teachers develop student musicians. Phillips authored over 25 educational series, including all six levels of Sound Innovations, and his genre-specific collections (Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, and others) have redefined what string students can explore and master.

Over 27 years in Saline, Michigan, Phillips built a nationally recognized string program serving over 700 students across classical and contemporary styles. His ensembles have performed at the Midwest Clinic, state and national conferences, and multiple times at the White House. Beyond the classroom, he founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic and served as resident conductor and arranger for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle. An ASCAP award-winning composer with more than 200 published works, Phillips continues to influence music education through his instructional materials and conducting appearances at youth orchestras, all-state ensembles, and summer programs nationwide.
