About the Composer: Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips (b. 1953) has shaped string education as a composer, pedagogue, and conductor known for reimagining how large ensembles develop musicianship. Over three decades in Saline, Michigan, he built a string program exceeding 700 students and established the internationally recognized Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, which performed over 80 shows annually and played at the White House multiple times. His approach to eclectic styles through series like Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, and Rock Philharmonic has influenced string teachers nationwide.

Phillips has authored more than 25 instructional series, including all six levels of Sound Innovations, and published over 200 works for orchestras and bands. An award-winning ASCAP composer, he has conducted all-state and honors orchestras across the country, served as resident conductor and arranger for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle for 12 years, and continues to reach educators through his instructional video series String Clinics to Go.

Why we love this

Sound Orchestra isolates the foundational skills your ensemble needs most, organizing 270 carefully sequenced exercises by key signature so you can target intonation, balance, and articulation without jumping between method books. The inclusion of both string orchestra and full orchestra versions, plus optional wind and percussion parts, means you adapt this to your exact instrumentation rather than forcing repertoire into a one-size-fits-all mold. Directors report that the orchestral themes woven throughout keep students engaged while the systematic progression builds the tonal cohesion that transforms a competent group into one worth hearing.

What to expect

Structured and purposeful, yet organic. These exercises avoid the sterility of dry technical drills by grounding each exercise in real orchestral contexts; a timpani player encounters rhythmic patterns they will actually perform in repertoire, so the work feels connected rather than abstract. The progression from isolated technical focus to fuller orchestral themes creates momentum that keeps students invested.

Who it's for

Intermediate through advanced string orchestras seeking systematic ensemble development, as well as full orchestras with wind and percussion sections who need supplementary material that builds on shared fundamentals. Directors working with mixed ensembles or those switching between string-only and full orchestra configurations will find the flexible instrumentation especially practical.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the teacher's score to identify which sections need attention; the timpani part supports the ensemble's rhythmic foundation, so focus on locking the timpani attacks with the string sections to clarify pulse and phrasing.
  • Work through the exercises in key signature order to build proprioceptive confidence; when timpani and ensemble share the same tonal center repeatedly, intonation problems become audible faster and students self-correct.
  • Layer the optional piano or wind parts strategically during rehearsal to expose balance issues; timpani becomes most useful when you alternate between full orchestra configurations and reduced ensembles.
  • Return to chorales frequently as check-ins rather than one-time drills; the timpani line often doubles bass voices, so students will notice when blend deteriorates if you revisit familiar material across weeks.

How to use it

Integrate this as a weekly warm-up foundation during the school year, rotating through different key signatures and exercise types on a regular schedule to reinforce concepts alongside your main repertoire. Use the orchestral theme excerpts as transitions between unrelated pieces on the concert program, or isolate a single exercise to prepare an ensemble for a specific intonation or balance challenge in your performance music.

Skills your students will build

  • Pitch accuracy and intonation in multiple key signatures
  • Ensemble blend and balance across string and full orchestra textures
  • Articulation clarity and consistency across bowings or attacks
  • Reading and responding to the timpani part as rhythmic and tonal anchor
  • Phrasing awareness through chorale study
  • Technical facility in intermediate through advanced keys
  • Listening skills for tone quality and balance in large ensembles
