More about this title

About the Composer: Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips (b. 1953) stands as a defining figure in contemporary string pedagogy. Over four decades, he has shaped how thousands of students encounter ensemble playing through his 25+ published series, from Sound Innovations to the groundbreaking eclectic styles collections (Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, Mariachi Philharmonic, and others). His award-winning compositions have appeared in over 200 published works for orchestras and bands, performed regularly at the Midwest Clinic and beyond.

For 27 years, Phillips built the string program in Saline, Michigan into a national model, growing it to over 700 students and establishing the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, which became internationally recognized through 80+ annual performances, White House appearances, and festival presentations. He has served as conductor for all-state orchestras across multiple states, the Queensland Honour Ensemble Program, and held a 12-year residency as conductor and arranger with the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle.

Why we love this

This viola book integrates seamlessly into rehearsals as a complement to your performance music rather than replacing it. The 270 graded exercises isolate the exact technical and musical challenges your ensemble will encounter in repertoire (blend, balance, intonation, articulation), making targeted sectional work both efficient and measurable. Built by a team with decades of large-ensemble teaching experience, it reflects what actually works in rehearsal.

What to expect

Focused and purposeful. Each exercise targets a specific ensemble skill without excess fluff, and the progression from technical fundamentals to orchestral themes keeps students engaged in meaningful musical work. Violists work alongside the full ensemble sound, building confidence and ownership in the ensemble's collective voice.

Who it's for

Viola players in intermediate through advanced string orchestras or full orchestras who need targeted work on ensemble fundamentals. Directors seeking a systematic method to build tone quality, intonation accuracy, and unified articulation across an entire section or orchestra.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through exercises by key signature rather than sequentially; this lets you target intonation and resonance in keys your repertoire demands.
  • Use the chorales and orchestral themes to connect isolated technical work back to musicmaking; they remind violists why precision matters.
  • Compare your section's sound on an exercise across multiple rehearsals to track improvements in blend and tone quality.
  • Assign exercises from the same key signature across several rehearsals rather than exhausting one exercise in a single session.

How to use it

Open each rehearsal or sectional with one or two exercises in a key your current repertoire emphasizes. The chorales and orchestral themes work beautifully as warm-ups that prime intonation and blend before diving into full ensemble pieces. Use this resource consistently across the year to reinforce what you're asking of violists in performance literature.

Skills your students will build

  • Intonation precision in multiple key signatures
  • Unified articulation and tone production within a section
  • Blend and balance awareness in ensemble context
  • Music reading fluency in varied harmonic contexts
  • Phrasing and expression in orchestral texture
  • Technical facility through systematic, isolated drill
