More about this title
About the Composer: André E. M. Grétry
André Grétry (1741, 1813) was a Belgian-born composer who became one of the most celebrated opera composers of the late 18th century, eventually settling in Paris where he dominated the opéra comique genre. Though he composed instrumental works, sacred music, and orchestral pieces throughout his career, Grétry's influence on music education extends through the melodic clarity and harmonic directness that characterize his best work, qualities that have made many of his themes ideal material for hymn arrangements.
Why we love this
Victor Labenske's arrangements respect the integrity of these beloved melodies while making them genuinely playable for intermediate pianists working in real church settings. Rather than padding simple hymns with unnecessary technique, each arrangement focuses on idiomatic piano writing that sounds stylistically coherent whether you're covering a prelude or filling time during an offertory.
What to expect
Dignified and approachable. These arrangements preserve the emotional weight of classic hymns while remaining grounded in accessible piano writing that sounds assured without demanding virtuosity. Opening any page, you encounter music that feels both familiar and freshly voiced.
Who it's for
Church pianists serving in traditional and contemporary worship settings who need reliable, musically respectful arrangements that don't demand extensive practice time. This collection also serves as excellent study material for intermediate students learning to approach standard repertoire with stylistic awareness and hymn-playing fundamentals.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance melody and accompaniment carefully in the right hand during passages where both appear; resist the impulse to spotlight the tune at the expense of the harmonic interest beneath it.
- Pay close attention to any tempo or character markings unique to each arrangement; the collection spans multiple styles, and treating them all identically will flatten the intended variety.
- In pieces with sustained harmonic backgrounds, maintain even voicing and avoid rushing into the next chord change; let the support breathe so the melody can float naturally above it.
How to use it
Use individual selections as service music throughout the church year, pairing them with congregational singing or positioning them as instrumental interludes. The lay-flat binding and 128-page scope make this an invaluable companion for pianists who need to move quickly between contrasting musical moods and styles within a single service.
Skills your students will build
- Pedal control in hymn arrangements with varied harmonic rhythms
- Balancing multiple textural layers (melody, inner voices, bass) within a single staff arrangement
- Intonation and phrasing in extended melodic passages
- Stylistic awareness across different accompanimental approaches (block chords, arpeggios, broken figures)
- Quick sight-reading and minimal-preparation performance skills
