About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske teaches piano and composition at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he is also an alumnus. He holds a master's degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Southern California, studying with Stewart Gordon.
Beyond the classroom, Labenske maintains an active concert career as both soloist and collaborative musician. He has performed at the 1984 Olympic Games opening ceremonies and regularly presents keyboard workshops alongside his wife, Judith Spaite Labenske. His published catalog includes over 700 compositions and arrangements across multiple genres and difficulty levels, with significant contributions to sacred music pedagogy through the Sunday Morning Companion series and Play Praise collections.
Why we love this
These arrangements strike the balance every church pianist needs: they sound genuinely musical and worship-appropriate without demanding extensive preparation time. Labenske's varied stylistic approaches mean you can program pieces that match your sanctuary's aesthetic, whether you're looking for something traditional or contemporary in character. The comb binding design respects the realities of Sunday mornings, letting the book stay open reliably at the keyboard.
What to expect
Familiar melodies arrive dressed in thoughtful harmonic language that respects tradition while revealing new colors beneath the surface. Each piece maintains the hymn's essential character while offering pianistic interest that makes them rewarding to practice and perform, whether played as a quiet prelude or a confident postlude.
Who it's for
Church pianists at intermediate and late intermediate levels who need reliable, well-crafted arrangements for services, weddings, and special events. This collection serves music students working toward performance experience in a worship setting, as well as teachers seeking quality sacred repertoire for lesson studies.
How to get the most out of it
- Study the harmonic language in context of the melody line. These arrangements often feature unexpected voicings that deepen the familiar tune; let them shape your touch and pedal choices rather than playing over them.
- Mark breath points and phrase endings clearly in pencil before your first rehearsal. Many of these pieces work best with subtle rubato at phrase boundaries.
- Experiment with registration using the sustain pedal. Different hymn texts call for different amounts of resonance; a piece meant for quiet reflection needs different pedaling than one suited for a joyful congregational moment.
- Listen to the recorded accompaniments if available to hear one interpretation, then trust your own musicianship. These arrangements are designed to accommodate multiple approaches.
How to use it
Draw from this collection throughout the church year, matching arrangements to the liturgical calendar or season. A Festival selection, these pieces also work well as contemporary recital material for piano students preparing for performance exams or annual showcases.
Skills your students will build
