About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske holds the position of piano and composition professor at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. He completed his undergraduate degree summa cum laude at PLNU, then pursued advanced studies in piano performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory under Joanne Baker, followed by a Doctor of Musical Arts from USC under Stewart Gordon.
Beyond the classroom, Labenske maintains an active concert life as both soloist and collaborative artist, and has received recognition including a performance slot in the 1984 Olympic Games opening ceremonies and selection as an Academic All-American Scholar. His compositional catalog exceeds 700 published works across multiple difficulty levels. His sacred music publishing includes the Sunday Morning Companion series and Play Praise, a graded collection of contemporary worship music for student pianists. Labenske frequently leads keyboard workshops and performs sacred concerts alongside his wife, Judith Spaite Labenske.
Why we love this
A collection this size and stylistically varied deserves an arranger who understands both hymn tradition and contemporary church needs. Labenske delivers clean, singable voicings that work equally well as standalone preludes or supporting congregational singing. The lay-flat binding and minimal prep requirements make this genuinely usable week to week.
What to expect
These arrangements honor hymn melodies while giving them contemporary harmonic interest and varied stylistic treatments. You'll find moments of gentle accompaniment and moments of fuller texture, creating dynamic shape across a full service or recital program. The music sits comfortably under the hands and sounds polished without demanding hours of practice.
Who it's for
Church pianists who need reliable, attractive arrangements they can prepare quickly for Sunday services. The intermediate-to-late intermediate level makes it accessible for pianists with solid technique but without requiring virtuosic chops. This works equally well for students building a sacred repertoire and for experienced players seeking fresh arrangements of familiar material.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the melody against harmonic color rather than treating it as the loudest voice. These arrangements gain character when accompaniment patterns remain audible.
- Notice how tempo choices can shift mood significantly; a flowing "Fairest Lord Jesus" reads differently than a stately interpretation. Find what matches your worship environment.
- Pedal judiciously to avoid muddying the harmonic progressions. Many of these pieces benefit from selective pedal changes at structural points rather than continuous sustain.
- The stylistic variety means context matters. A march arrangement demands different articulation than a lyrical setting of the same tune.
How to use it
Build an entire service's musical framework from this single collection, mixing prelude, offertory, and postlude selections that complement your liturgical flow. The 30+ titles mean you can program continuously throughout a church year without repeating repertoire. Consider pairing stylistically similar arrangements into short medley programs for special services or recitals.
Skills your students will build

- Style-specific articulation and pedaling in sacred music contexts
- Reading and executing tempo and dynamic markings that reflect liturgical function
