About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske holds the position of professor of music at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he directs the piano program and teaches composition. He completed his doctoral work in piano performance at the University of Southern California under Stewart Gordon, and earned his master's degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music.
With more than 700 published compositions and arrangements to his name, Labenske has established himself as a prolific voice in sacred and educational music. His work has been recognized by the Music Teachers National Association, and he remains active as both a concert soloist and collaborative performer. He frequently conducts keyboard workshops and presents sacred concerts alongside his wife, Judith Spaite Labenske.
Why we love this
Labenske understands what church pianists actually need: repertoire that sounds polished without demanding hours of preparation time. The collection spans liturgical traditions and musical styles, so whether you're playing a formal processional, a gentle offertory, or a joyful postlude, you'll find arrangements that fit the moment rather than fight against it. The lay-flat binding alone makes this book worth owning for the practical pianist who's juggling multiple services each week.
What to expect
Familiar melodies dressed in fresh but never fussy arrangements. There's a grounded, purposeful quality to these pieces; they anchor a worship service while allowing the pianist some genuine musical voice through varied accompaniment textures and harmonic colors.
Who it's for
Church pianists serving Sunday services, preludes, offertories, and postludes. Intermediate to late intermediate pianists comfortable with basic harmonic accompaniment and who value practical, performance-ready repertoire that requires minimal rehearsal time.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the hymn tune itself against any accompaniment figuration. These melodies are meant to be recognized and sung along with, so let the familiar line breathe even when supporting voices provide harmonic color.
- Experiment with tempo within each piece. A tune's historical context often suggests its character; check whether the arrangement offers guidance, but trust your ears on whether a piece settles better at a walking pace or with gentle motion.
- Let the variety of styles in this collection inform how you approach registration and touch. An arrangement rendered in one harmonic language will need different voicing decisions than one written in a more contemporary idiom.
How to use it
Draw on specific hymns from this collection to fill weekly liturgical needs throughout the church year. The 30+ titles mean you can layer this into your regular rotation without exhausting the material, and the variety of styles lets you match the arrangement's character to the theological tone of each Sunday's service.
Skills your students will build
- Playing hymn melodies with confident, clear voicing while managing underlying accompaniment patterns
- Navigating harmonic progressions in varied stylistic contexts (traditional, contemporary, jazz-inflected)
- Developing flexible tempo and rubato control for sacred material
- Reading and interpreting performance indications that shape interpretive choices
