About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske teaches piano and composition at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he completed his undergraduate degree summa cum laude. He holds a master's degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music (studying with Joanne Baker) and a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Southern California (studying with Stewart Gordon). His honors include a performance in the 1984 Olympic Games opening ceremonies and Academic All-American Scholar recognition.
With over 700 published compositions and arrangements across multiple difficulty levels, Labenske has established himself as a prolific voice in sacred music for pianists. His work regularly appears in Alfred Music publications, and his Sunday Morning Companion series has become a staple resource for church musicians. Beyond composing, he remains active as a concert soloist and collaborative performer, frequently presenting keyboard workshops and sacred concerts alongside his wife, Judith Spaite Labenske.
Why we love this
Labenske knows exactly what a church pianist needs: quick-to-learn arrangements that sound polished without demanding hours of preparation. These 30+ hymns cover the major titles you'll actually use in worship, arranged in varied styles so you can match the tone of any service. The comb binding is a practical touch that keeps the book open where you need it, making transitions between pieces seamless during a service.
What to expect
Familiar hymns restored to their full harmonic beauty without unnecessary complications. Each arrangement respects the melody while offering fresh voicings and accompaniment patterns that make these beloved songs feel both timeless and contemporary.
Who it's for
Church pianists and organists who need reliable, presentation-ready arrangements for regular Sunday services. Intermediate pianists developing their sight-reading and transposition skills will find the variety of styles and keys especially useful for building confidence and flexibility.
How to get the most out of it
- Read ahead to identify key signature changes between consecutive hymns; marking these transitions in your copy eliminates fumbling during page turns.
- Experiment with touch and voicing to match the emotional weight of each hymn, some benefit from a legato, singing approach while others work better with rhythmic clarity.
- Practice the accompaniment patterns in isolation before combining them with the melody so your left hand can provide steady support without demanding your focus.
How to use it
Load this into your music library as your primary hymn resource for the entire church year. You can quickly select pieces that match specific liturgical themes or emotional arcs within a service, and the intermediate level means you can sight-read new selections with minimal advance prep when last-minute requests come through.
Skills your students will build
- Accompanying hymn melodies with appropriate harmonic support and rhythmic flexibility
- Reading across various key signatures and identifying modulations between pieces
- Developing quick preparation and sight-reading skills for functional music contexts
- Balancing melody with accompaniment to maintain clear voice leading
- Understanding stylistic variation within sacred music traditions
