More about this title

About the Composer: Jule Styne

Jule Styne (1905-1975) composed the scores for some of Broadway's most enduring musicals, including Gypsy, Funny Girl, and Bells Are Ringing. His gift for melody and rhythmic variety made him a favorite among lyricists and directors; his collaborations with Stephen Sondheim on Gypsy produced some of the most dramatically sophisticated musical theater songs ever written.

For music educators, Styne's work offers rich material for teaching theatrical song craft. His melodies sit naturally in the voice, his harmonies reward careful listening, and his sense of dramatic timing helps young singers understand how music serves a story.

Why we love this

Larry Shackley's arrangement captures the theatrical DNA of the original: four distinct musical moods within a single song that keeps singers engaged and audiences entertained. The variety (2-beat, swing, waltz, kick line) gives every section its own character while remaining accessible at the SSA level, making this both musically satisfying and genuinely fun to perform.

What to expect

Playful and theatrical from the start, this arrangement invites singers to inhabit different musical worlds: the crisp snap of vaudeville, the smooth glide of swing, the twirl of a waltz, and the unbridled joy of a kick line finale. It feels like stepping into a performance and discovering new colors in a familiar song.

Who it's for

SSA choirs looking for a show-stopping number that combines theatrical flair with solid musicianship. This works for middle school through community choirs that want a piece with personality and built-in audience appeal without sacrificing musical substance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening 2-beat section with clean articulation and crisp rhythm; the style shift to swing works best when the ensemble fully commits to the first section's energy.
  • Balance the gentle swing and waltz sections by keeping dynamics controlled; let the arrangement's style changes do the work rather than forcing intensity into every moment.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock the style transitions, especially the kick line finale, so the ensemble stays together through the tonal shifts.
  • Stage the movements suggested in the arrangement notes; the physical commitment to each style (marching, swaying, waltzing, kicking) deepens the singers' understanding of the music.

How to use it

Program this as a showstopper in a pops concert or musical theater-themed performance where the stylistic variety and staging will shine. It works equally well as a finale or as the centerpiece of a set exploring Broadway's comedic energy.
