Alfred's Basic Piano Library

Teachers keep coming back to Lesson Book 1A and its companion Theory Book 1A, both by Willard A. Palmer, as the starting point for new students. Lesson Book 1B and the Prep Course materials extend that foundation for younger or less experienced learners. The Universal Edition versions, which include a CD, give studios another option for students who need audio reinforcement.

Holiday arrangements arrived in November 2025, including seasonal piano/vocal pieces like Santa Tell Me (Ariana Grande, arranged by Ilya), You Make It Feel Like Christmas (Gwen Stefani, arranged by Justin Tranter), Last Christmas (Wham!, arranged by George Michael), and the instrumental Main Title from Elf (John Debney). These are available both as standalone sheets and with optional duet accompaniments.

Willard A. Palmer is the architect of this entire series. A prolific composer and pedagogue, Dr. Palmer wrote over 789 published works across piano, guitar, accordion, and choral music. His Lesson Book 1A has sold tens of thousands of copies and remains the entry point for most students encountering Alfred's method. His approach balances technique, music literacy, and repertoire from the very first page.

Morton Manus and Amanda Vick Lethco co-authored the method with Palmer. Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing from 1952 to 2016, shaping the company's direction during its most influential decades. Dr. Lethco studied at Juilliard and the University of Texas, bringing deep expertise in piano pedagogy to the method's design. Together, their work created a curriculum trusted across studios worldwide.

Gayle Kowalchyk and E. L. Lancaster have extended the library's reach through supplementary materials like the Notespeller Book 1A. Both are piano pedagogy specialists with doctoral training, and both have taught piano pedagogy at university level. Their contributions bring classroom experience and research-based practice to supporting materials that reinforce the core method.

Tom Gerou is known for his versatile arrangements throughout the collection. His output spans notation references, orchestration guides, and popular arrangements that have become standards in piano teachers' resource libraries. His arrangements for Alfred's Greatest Hits and Patriotic Solos show a gift for making familiar music accessible to early students.
