Description
The gospel-style vocals rock, the driving accompaniment kicks it up a notch, but it may be the stop-time section that stands out most in this not-so-traditional arrangement of a traditional spiritual. Lon Beery's careful attention to appropriate vocal ranges is apparent in all voicings, even offering an optional baritone part in the 3-part mixed. With so much going for it, it's hard to say whether this piece is more educational or entertaining. A must have!

Don't just read it, hear it, play along with it, and watch your students grow with it. In MakeMusic Cloud, Twelve Gates: 2-Part Choral Octavo comes alive with professional accompaniment, adjustable tempo, and built-in practice tools that turn solo practice into real progress.

About the Arranger: Lon Beery

Lon Beery

Lon Beery directs six choruses at Spry Middle School in Webster, New York, where his programs serve 500 students. His catalog includes over 50 published choral works distributed through Alfred Music, BriLee, and other publishers, and his compositions have earned multiple ASCAP Standard Awards.

Beery's work has reached national stages: his TTBB composition I Believe was performed by the U.S. Army Chorus at President Ronald Reagan's internment service. He contributes regularly to the Choral Journal and Music Educators Journal, leads sessions at ACDA and MENC conferences, and currently serves as Middle School Chair for New York ACDA.

Why we love this

The stop-time sections inject real energy and surprise into what could have been a straightforward spiritual arrangement. Beery's voicing choices keep the part ranges accessible for young singers without sacrificing the vigor of the accompaniment, which means your singers stay comfortable while the piece still commands attention in performance.

What to expect

The piece pulses with infectious forward motion through its driving accompaniment and gospel inflections, then catches you with the sudden rhythmic space of the stop-time section. There's joy and conviction throughout, paired with moments that let the text breathe.

Who it's for

Middle and early high school choirs looking for contemporary gospel energy without losing connection to the spiritual tradition. Works equally well for groups seeking a bold concert opener or finale.

How to get the most out of it

  • Nail the rhythmic precision in the stop-time section with your rhythm section locked in first, then layer voices on top only after that foundation is solid.
  • Balance the gospel-inflected melodic shapes with clear diction; the call-and-response moments land harder when consonants are crisp.
  • If you're using the recorded accompaniment, rehearse with it early and often so singers internalize the groove rather than fighting against it.

How to use it

Place this early in a concert to establish energy and engagement, or reserve it as a closer that sends audiences out energized. It pairs well with other spirituals and contemporary sacred works, but stands distinctly apart enough to anchor a program section on its own.

Skills your students will build

  • Gospel stylistic phrasing and vocal color
  • Rhythmic independence in stop-time figures
  • Part-singing stability with accessible range placement
  • Ensemble lock with driving rhythm section accompaniment
