Description
This series offers a versatile selection of the hottest pop and rock songs for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello that can be performed as ensembles or solos. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2--3 students. The CD includes a fully orchestrated demo track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a play-along track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer software. Due to level considerations regarding keys and instrument ranges, the arrangements in the wind instrument series are not compatible with those in the string instrument series.

More about this title

Why we love this

Horn players at this level rarely get to play the songs their peers are listening to, and this collection changes that. The arrangements sit comfortably in the intermediate range without sacrificing the groove and energy that makes these tracks recognizable, so students stay engaged while building fundamental skills.

What to expect

Modern, energetic, and accessible. These are songs students know, arranged so horn sits naturally in the texture without extreme technical demands. The recorded accompaniment brings full production value, making a single player sound like part of a complete band.

Who it's for

Horn players in grades 2-3 who want to perform contemporary music without waiting for classical literature to feel relevant. This book works equally well for students in concert band, jazz ensemble, or private lessons seeking repertoire that motivates daily practice.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance your tone with the recorded accompaniment during rehearsal so you hear how your part sits in the mix. The horn often carries melodic responsibility here, so your sound needs clarity without overpowering the groove.
  • Use the demo tracks to internalize phrasing and articulation before moving to the play-along. Hearing a complete performance first helps you understand where to breathe and how to shape phrases stylistically.
  • Lock in rhythmically with the kick and bass on the accompaniment track. Pop and rock arrangements depend on tight rhythm section feel, so practice with the recording from day one rather than waiting until final rehearsals.

How to use it

Feature individual horn students in a pop and rock concert, or program selections as interludes between classical pieces to showcase your ensemble's versatility. These arrangements also work well for recruitment events where prospective students hear contemporary music performed with polish.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing stylistically appropriate articulation in pop and rock idioms
  • Maintaining consistent tone and intonation over recorded accompaniments
  • Phrasing and breath management in contemporary melodic contexts
  • Rhythmic precision in grooved styles with strong backbeat emphasis
