Description
This series offers a versatile selection of the hottest pop and rock songs for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello that can be performed as ensembles or solos. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2--3 students. The CD includes a fully orchestrated demo track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a play-along track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer software. Due to level considerations regarding keys and instrument ranges, the arrangements in the wind instrument series are not compatible with those in the string instrument series.

More about this title

Why we love this

These arrangements capture the energy of current pop and rock radio hits without dumbing down the musicianship. The inclusion of both demo and play-along tracks gives students immediate models for tone and phrasing, while the piano accompaniment PDFs and Tempo Changer software mean you can customize learning pace and rehearsal flexibility for each clarinetist in your section.

What to expect

Immediate energy and relevance. You and your students know these melodies already, so the focus shifts to nailing the style, feel, and technique that makes the original recording so infectious. There's a freedom in playing music that matters to teenagers.

Who it's for

Level 2-3 clarinetists who are eager to play songs they actually hear on the radio. These arrangements work equally well for students preparing solo material or for classroom ensembles looking to add contemporary repertoire that connects with young musicians' lives outside of school.

How to get the most out of it

  • Match your tone quality to the demo track. Pop and rock solos often benefit from a slightly brighter, more forward sound than classical work; use the recorded solo as a tonal reference.
  • Work the rhythm section parts alongside your clarinetists. These arrangements sit in contemporary grooves, so locking in the backbeat and syncopation with your rhythm players will make the ensemble sound polished.
  • Use the Tempo Changer software during sectionals to slow tempos on tricky passages, then gradually build back to the original speed once the notes are secure.
  • Pay attention to the articulation style in each tune. Some of these hits thrive on light tonguing and swing feels, while others call for legit, sustained playing. The demo track will show you the difference.

How to use it

Build a spring concert around these hits, pairing them with one or two classical or jazz selections to show your clarinetists' range. You can also drop individual titles into regular rehearsals as sight-reading material or quick warm-up features, since the level is approachable and the payoff is immediate audience recognition.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing in contemporary pop and rock styles
  • Matching articulation and tone color to recorded references
  • Playing syncopated and swing-influenced rhythms
  • Ensemble balance and blend within a rhythm section
  • Tempo control and flexibility using accompaniment software
