Description
This series offers a versatile selection of the hottest pop and rock songs for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello that can be performed as ensembles or solos. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2--3 students. The CD includes a fully orchestrated demo track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a play-along track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer software. Due to level considerations regarding keys and instrument ranges, the arrangements in the wind instrument series are not compatible with those in the string instrument series.

More about this title

Why we love this

Thirteen contemporary hits arranged at an accessible level gives your tenor sax players immediate ownership of songs they actually know and want to play. The dual-track CD format (demo followed by play-along) means students can learn by listening to a professional model, then perform independently, making this book equally valuable for solo practice and ensemble work.

What to expect

Contemporary, engaging, and immediately gratifying. These arrangements capture the energy and melodic appeal of current hits while keeping the technical demands reasonable, so players can focus on phrasing and feel rather than fighting the notes.

Who it's for

Tenor saxophone players at grades 2-3 who are ready for contemporary repertoire that connects to the music in their lives. This book works equally well for students preparing solo recital material and for ensembles wanting accessible pop and rock literature.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the demo track first to hear exactly how the solo sits in the texture and what articulation style fits the original song's character.
  • Use the play-along track to lock into the rhythm section's groove; these pop and rock charts depend on tight rhythmic feel, not just note accuracy.
  • Balance projection with the recorded accompaniment by rehearsing at performance volume in the space where you'll play; the CD won't adjust its level to match yours.

How to use it

Program one or two of these pieces on a solo and ensemble festival, or use them as warm-up material that energizes rehearsals before diving into concert repertoire. A tenor sax solo backed by the orchestrated track creates a polished, full-band sound that impresses audiences without requiring large ensemble resources.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing with recorded accompaniments and managing independent balance
  • Matching articulation and phrasing to contemporary song styles
  • Reading arrangements that reflect authentic pop and rock voicings and rhythmic feels
  • Performing in multiple keys across a cohesive songbook
