Description
This series offers a versatile selection of the hottest pop and rock songs for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello that can be performed as ensembles or solos. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2--3 students. The CD includes a fully orchestrated demo track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a play-along track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer software. Due to level considerations regarding keys and instrument ranges, the arrangements in the wind instrument series are not compatible with those in the string instrument series.

More about this title

Why we love this

Flute players finally get contemporary repertoire that matches what their peers in jazz band and pop ensembles are playing. The 13-song collection spans radio hits from the last decade, so students recognize the melodies immediately and stay engaged through the whole piece. The accompanying demo and play-along tracks mean you can assign these as solo contest material or ensemble pieces without needing a pianist in the room.

What to expect

Fresh, current, and unapologetically fun. These are songs students hear on streaming playlists and in TikTok videos, arranged so the flute carries the melody with enough rhythmic support underneath to feel like a complete band. The energy shifts between laid-back grooves and infectious pop hooks, keeping the flute voice in the spotlight throughout.

Who it's for

Flute students in grades 2 and 3 who are ready to play outside the classical solo repertoire but need arrangements tailored to their developing range and technique. This collection works equally well for independent practice, solo competition preparation, or collaborative ensemble performance with other flutists or wind players.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the recorded demo guide your phrasing and articulation choices before diving into solo practice. The track models stylistically appropriate choices that may differ from classical interpretation.
  • Balance the flute's natural brightness with the groove of the accompaniment; these arrangements thrive when the solo voice locks rhythmically with the band rather than sitting on top of it.
  • Use the Tempo Changer software to slow challenging passages down while keeping the recorded instrumental sound intact, so intonation issues and fast runs become manageable.
  • Experiment with the play-along version in different keys or tempos to build flexibility and prevent the accompaniment from becoming a crutch.

How to use it

Slot these into a spring or year-end concert to show families how flute students apply skills to modern hits. They also work as solo event or festival entries, especially when your student has prepared the piece with the accompaniment track. If you have enough copies, small ensembles of flutists can perform multiple titles on the same program.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and playing in varied pop and rock styles
  • Rhythmic precision against a groove-based accompaniment
  • Phrasing and articulation choices within a contemporary musical context
  • Confidence performing solo melody lines in ensemble contexts
  • Sight-reading accuracy in level 2-3 instrumental ranges
