Description
Cirque du Soleil, French for "Circus of the Sun," is a unique entertainment venture that has been thrilling audiences since its inception by two street performers over 20 years ago. Acts include a unique combination of individual storylines, dance and opera performances, contortionists, jugglers, trapeze artists and many other talented performers, all set to the tune of live music. While performances do not feature the animals typically found in a regular circus, the modern style of Cirque du Soleil has earned it recognition as one of the world's best circuses for their use of extreme creativity, talented performers, and their ability to constantly evolve shows to maintain their enthralling nature.

Alfred now introduces the music to some of Cirque du Soleil's most popular songs, derived from a variety of show soundtracks. Songs come complete with lyrics, melody line, and chord changes with professionally arranged piano accompaniment.

More about this title

About the Artist: Cirque Du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil emerged in 1984 from the creative vision of two Montreal street performers, Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix, who reimagined the circus as a theatrical art form. The company has grown into a global entertainment powerhouse, creating spectacular shows that blend acrobatics, dance, music, and visual design into immersive narratives performed in theaters and touring venues across the world.

From Mystère to Kà to O, Cirque du Soleil's productions are built on distinctive musical scores that reflect the emotional arc and visual spectacle of each show. The composers and musicians behind these soundtracks create pieces that range from intimate vocal moments to sweeping orchestral passages, all designed to support the physical artistry and storytelling happening on stage.

Why we love this

This collection gives vocalists and pianists direct access to music from some of the most visually innovative theatrical productions of the past two decades. The arrangements respect the dramatic intent of each piece while remaining singable and playable in recital or educational settings, making Cirque du Soleil's distinctive sound available far beyond the theater venue.

What to expect

These pieces inhabit a musical world where European influences, world percussion, and contemporary harmony create an atmosphere of wonder and danger in equal measure. Whether lyrical and intimate or propulsive and mysterious, each song carries the theatrical DNA of its show while remaining emotionally direct and human.

Who it's for

This collection serves vocalists preparing recital or audition material that stands apart from standard art song repertoire, as well as pianists seeking contemporary theatrical music that offers both technical interest and emotional depth. Music theater students and performers will find pieces that connect directly to the vocabulary of modern circus and spectacle-driven performance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study recordings from the original productions before rehearsal. Hearing how these pieces function within the larger theatrical context will inform phrasing, dynamic shape, and the emotional subtext you bring to your performance.
  • Balance the vocal line with the piano accompaniment so that the melody remains clear without drowning out the harmonic support. These arrangements are written to let the piano create atmosphere while the voice tells the story.
  • Pay attention to how silence and space are used in these pieces. Cirque du Soleil's theatrical aesthetic often relies on restraint and contrast, so resist the urge to fill every moment with sound.

How to use it

Program selections from this collection alongside other contemporary musical theater pieces to showcase the range of modern theatrical composition. A single aria or duet can serve as an exciting transition piece in a recital, or you might build an entire program around Cirque du Soleil works paired with art songs that share similar harmonic language or emotional territory.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing contemporary harmonic language with non-traditional chord progressions
  • Connecting vocal phrasing to theatrical storytelling and visual imagery
  • Collaborating with piano accompaniment to balance melody and atmospheric support
  • Interpreting lyrics in translated or multilingual contexts
  • Navigating rhythmic flexibility and rubato within modern compositional idioms
