Description
Cirque du Soleil, French for "Circus of the Sun," is a unique entertainment venture that has been thrilling audiences since its inception by two street performers over 20 years ago. Acts include a unique combination of individual storylines, dance and opera performances, contortionists, jugglers, trapeze artists and many other talented performers, all set to the tune of live music. While performances do not feature the animals typically found in a regular circus, the modern style of Cirque du Soleil has earned it recognition as one of the world's best circuses for their use of extreme creativity, talented performers, and their ability to constantly evolve shows to maintain their enthralling nature.

Alfred now introduces the music to some of Cirque du Soleil's most popular songs, derived from a variety of show soundtracks. Songs come complete with lyrics, melody line, and chord changes with professionally arranged piano accompaniment.

More about this title

About the Artist: Cirque Du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil emerged from the creative vision of two Montreal street performers, Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix, who built a theatrical empire by fusing acrobatics, dance, live music, and storytelling into a wholly original performance art form. Since its founding in 1984, the company has redefined what "circus" means in contemporary culture, creating visually stunning productions that blend athleticism with theatrical narrative and original musical composition across dozens of shows performed worldwide.

Why we love this

This collection gives singers and pianists direct access to the distinctive musical language of Cirque du Soleil productions. The arrangements preserve the theatrical drama and melodic character of the original scores while remaining playable in recital, classroom, or ensemble settings. Pairing the melody line with chord changes creates real flexibility for directors programming contemporary material that genuinely excites student performers.

What to expect

These arrangements shimmer with theatrical magic, blending accessible melodies with harmonic sophistication and rhythmic vitality. The piano writing captures the spectacle and movement of Cirque du Soleil's live performances, creating an accompaniment that energizes rather than simply supports the voice.

Who it's for

Vocalists preparing recital repertoire that showcases contemporary theatrical music will find these arrangements both singable and dramatically compelling. Piano students accompanying singers gain experience with arrangements that balance supporting the vocal line while maintaining the orchestral color and energy of the original productions. Directors seeking to program visually or thematically engaging concert material will appreciate songs that already carry strong narrative and musical identity from their Cirque du Soleil origins.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the original Cirque du Soleil recordings alongside the sheet music to capture the theatrical phrasing and dynamic shape that define each song's character.
  • Pay attention to rhythmic precision in the piano part; these arrangements often reflect the intricate percussion and ensemble textures of the live shows, so lock the accompaniment with the vocal line early.
  • Use the chord symbols to explore harmonic variations or reharmonization options if performing with instrumental accompaniment beyond piano.
  • Remember that Cirque du Soleil's music often blends world music influences and contemporary pop sensibilities; let that fusion inform your interpretive choices rather than defaulting to a classical art song approach.

How to use it

Include "Liama" in a contemporary pops or cabaret-style concert, where it pairs naturally with other theatrical or world music repertoire. The song's distinctive character and strong melodic line make it equally effective as a solo recital selection or as part of a thematic program exploring music from modern circus and theatrical entertainment. Consider pairing it with other songs from this collection to create a Cirque du Soleil-themed concert moment.
