Description
Cirque du Soleil, French for "Circus of the Sun," is a unique entertainment venture that has been thrilling audiences since its inception by two street performers over 20 years ago. Acts include a unique combination of individual storylines, dance and opera performances, contortionists, jugglers, trapeze artists and many other talented performers, all set to the tune of live music. While performances do not feature the animals typically found in a regular circus, the modern style of Cirque du Soleil has earned it recognition as one of the world's best circuses for their use of extreme creativity, talented performers, and their ability to constantly evolve shows to maintain their enthralling nature.

Alfred now introduces the music to some of Cirque du Soleil's most popular songs, derived from a variety of show soundtracks. Songs come complete with lyrics, melody line, and chord changes with professionally arranged piano accompaniment.

More about this title

About the Artist: Cirque Du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil emerged from the vision of two street performers in Quebec in 1984, transforming circus performance into a multimedia art form that blends acrobatics, dance, music, and theatrical storytelling. The company has become a global phenomenon, creating original shows that tour internationally and push the boundaries of live entertainment through innovative design, original compositions, and fearless artistic risk-taking.

Why we love this

This collection captures the theatrical sweep and emotional depth that define Cirque du Soleil's soundscapes, giving singers and pianists access to music that demands genuine artistry rather than mere technical display. The diverse selection across multiple shows means you can program a single standout number or build an entire recital around the Cirque aesthetic, and the professionally arranged accompaniments respect both the original vision and the practical needs of the rehearsal room.

What to expect

These pieces shimmer with the magical, slightly otherworldly atmosphere that Cirque du Soleil specializes in. Rich harmonic language, unexpected melodic turns, and an underlying sense of theatrical narrative create music that feels intimate one moment and sweeping the next, inviting performers and listeners into a world where the impossible becomes real.

Who it's for

Singers preparing recital repertoire, music theater students exploring non-traditional contemporary material, and pianists looking for engaging accompaniment work that goes beyond standard art song or classical canon. This collection also serves teachers and coaches working with intermediate to advanced vocalists who want to expand beyond conventional musical theater into more avant-garde theatrical music.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the original Cirque du Soleil recordings to absorb the emotional tone and pacing; these pieces thrive when performers understand the theatrical context that inspired them.
  • Balance the vocal line with the piano accompaniment carefully. These arrangements are lush, and it's easy for the singer to disappear into the texture if dynamics aren't managed with intention.
  • Attend to the lyrical quality of the melody even in moments of rhythmic complexity. Cirque's compositional style prizes beauty of line above all else.

How to use it

Feature a single selection as a centerpiece of a contemporary or musical theater recital, or build a themed program around multiple Cirque pieces to explore the breadth of the company's compositional voice. These works also work beautifully in chamber recitals or as bridge material in programs that mix classical and contemporary repertoire, offering a sophisticated alternative to more commercial musical theater selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining lyrical phrases over complex harmonic progressions
  • Navigating theatrical interpretation and emotional narrative in contemporary vocal music
  • Coordinating vocal line with dense, colorful piano accompaniments
  • Reading and performing non-traditional song structures that prioritize storytelling over conventional form
