Description
Cirque du Soleil, French for "Circus of the Sun," is a unique entertainment venture that has been thrilling audiences since its inception by two street performers over 20 years ago. Acts include a unique combination of individual storylines, dance and opera performances, contortionists, jugglers, trapeze artists and many other talented performers, all set to the tune of live music. While performances do not feature the animals typically found in a regular circus, the modern style of Cirque du Soleil has earned it recognition as one of the world's best circuses for their use of extreme creativity, talented performers, and their ability to constantly evolve shows to maintain their enthralling nature.

Alfred now introduces the music to some of Cirque du Soleil's most popular songs, derived from a variety of show soundtracks. Songs come complete with lyrics, melody line, and chord changes with professionally arranged piano accompaniment.

More about this title

About the Artist: Cirque Du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil emerged in 1984 when two Montreal street performers, Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix, reimagined what a circus could be. Rather than rely on animals and traditional circus acts, they built a company around acrobatics, dance, theater, and original music, creating immersive spectacles that blur the line between circus, opera, and contemporary performance art. The company has become one of the world's most successful live entertainment ventures, with multiple touring productions and a distinctive visual and sonic identity.

The music of Cirque du Soleil plays a central role in each production's storytelling. Composed by artists like Benoit Jutras and others, the scores combine world music influences, contemporary orchestration, and theatrical sensibility to create atmospheres that are simultaneously dreamlike and visceral. This catalog represents some of their most recognizable songs, arranged here for singers and pianists to explore.

Why we love this

This collection captures the theatrical energy and emotional depth that make Cirque du Soleil's music so compelling. "If I Could Reach Your Heart" sits at the heart of Kà's narrative, and having it arranged for piano and voice makes it accessible for recital singers, music theater students, and pianists seeking repertoire with genuine dramatic stakes and a contemporary edge.

What to expect

The piece carries the ethereal, emotionally charged quality that defines Kà's aesthetic. There's an underlying sense of yearning and spectacle, with the piano arrangement suggesting the orchestral grandeur of the production while remaining intimate enough for voice and piano to create genuine connection. It balances accessibility with artistic sophistication.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves singers preparing solo recital material with contemporary flair, music theater students building a performance portfolio, and pianists looking for engaging accompanying or sight-reading material that moves beyond standard classical repertoire. It's equally valuable for choir directors seeking a standalone piece that connects to popular culture students already know.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the vocal line so it floats above rather than fights the piano accompaniment; Cirque's music thrives on clarity of melody within lush orchestration
  • Attend to the rhythmic drive in the piano part even at slower tempos; these songs are written to create forward momentum and emotional propulsion
  • Shape the vocal phrases with the theatrical intent behind them; this song emerges from a specific moment in Kà's narrative, so connecting to that context deepens your interpretation
  • Explore the dynamic range within phrases rather than singing at a single level; the arrangement supports nuance and will reward expressive choices

How to use it

Program this alongside other contemporary or theatrical vocal music to create a themed recital segment. It works particularly well in a concert exploring music from popular entertainment or as a crossover piece that draws audiences unfamiliar with classical vocal repertoire. The recognizable source material also makes it an effective choice for student showcases or pops concerts.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrasing lyrical vocal lines over active accompaniment patterns
  • Reading and performing chord symbols in contemporary vocal arrangements
  • Interpreting theatrical context to inform musical choices
  • Managing sustained legit singing technique through a song with dramatic emotional arc
