Description
Cirque du Soleil, French for "Circus of the Sun," is a unique entertainment venture that has been thrilling audiences since its inception by two street performers over 20 years ago. Acts include a unique combination of individual storylines, dance and opera performances, contortionists, jugglers, trapeze artists and many other talented performers, all set to the tune of live music. While performances do not feature the animals typically found in a regular circus, the modern style of Cirque du Soleil has earned it recognition as one of the world's best circuses for their use of extreme creativity, talented performers, and their ability to constantly evolve shows to maintain their enthralling nature.

Alfred now introduces the music to some of Cirque du Soleil's most popular songs, derived from a variety of show soundtracks. Songs come complete with lyrics, melody line, and chord changes with professionally arranged piano accompaniment.

More about this title

About the Artist: Cirque Du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil emerged in 1984 from the creative vision of two street performers in Quebec, transforming contemporary circus into a global phenomenon. The company's signature style blends acrobatics, dance, live music, and theatrical storytelling into immersive experiences that have captivated audiences across multiple continents. Each show soundtrack reflects the company's commitment to sonic innovation, pairing elaborate instrumentation with evocative melodies that amplify the visual spectacle on stage.

For music educators and performers, Cirque du Soleil represents a bridge between popular entertainment and serious musical artistry. The compositions draw from diverse cultural traditions and contemporary styles, making them valuable additions to programs that celebrate world music, contemporary song, and theatrical repertoire.

Why we love this

Gamelan captures the hypnotic, percussive textures that define one of Cirque's most visually stunning productions without requiring an ensemble of traditional Indonesian instruments. The vocal melody sits naturally over the piano accompaniment, making it accessible for singers at intermediate levels while the harmonic language and rhythmic complexity reward more advanced interpreters.

What to expect

Gamelan evokes hypnotic calm and mysterious energy at once. Repetitive, shimmering patterns in the piano suggest the resonance of bronze instruments and gongs, while the vocal melody winds through the texture with an almost otherworldly presence, transporting you into the dreamlike visual world Cirque du Soleil constructs on stage.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for solo singers preparing recital material, voice students exploring world-influenced contemporary song, and music theater performers building repertoire rooted in theatrical spectacle. It also suits pianists looking for accompaniment pieces that demand both technical facility and interpretive sensitivity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Honor the piece's meditative quality by maintaining evenness in the piano's repeated figures; rhythmic precision here creates the trance-like effect that defines the gamelan aesthetic.
  • Shape the vocal line with sustained phrasing rather than emphasizing individual words; the melody should float above the accompaniment like a voice calling through mist.
  • Balance the voice and piano so the accompaniment remains audible and rhythmically present; the piano's patterns are as essential to the texture as the sung melody.
  • Explore the dynamic range across the full song; many Cirque pieces build intensity gradually, and tracking that arc helps convey the theatrical narrative embedded in the music.

How to use it

Include this piece in a concert exploring music from film, theater, and entertainment; it pairs well with art song, contemporary vocal works, or other Cirque selections from this collection. Its theatrical context makes it particularly effective as a transition piece or opening number that signals a shift in mood and style.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining legato lines over repeating rhythmic patterns
  • Balancing vocal projection with complex piano accompaniment
  • Interpreting non-Western musical aesthetics and timbral qualities in a Western notated format
  • Reading chord symbols in a performance-ready score
  • Collaborating as a singer-pianist team to maintain unified phrasing and expression
