More about this title

About the Composer: David Lantz III

David Lantz III

David Lantz III brings decades of classroom experience to his compositional work, spending his career as a vocal music educator in Pennsylvania public schools. His output spans roughly 500 published works across sacred and secular genres, with commissions and publications from major American music publishers, alongside scores for orchestra, symphonic band, jazz ensemble, and chamber combinations.

Beyond composition, Lantz works as a music editor and engraver, directs church choirs, and performs regularly as a bassist and vocalist in pop and jazz settings. He shares his creative life in northeastern Pennsylvania with his wife, composer Marti Lunn Lantz, and their five musically trained children.

Why we love this

Lantz writes choral music that feels genuinely performable and genuinely fun. ¡Danza! marries Spanish-language text with rhythmic drive and accessible voicing, giving your singers both an engaging piece to learn and a concert moment with real personality. The included movement and staging suggestions mean you're not building the theatrical concept from scratch.

What to expect

¡Danza! radiates infectious rhythmic vitality, its Spanish-language text and harmonic color creating a sense of celebration and movement. The piece draws you in with immediate appeal while offering substantive musicianship challenges beneath its accessible surface.

Who it's for

Choirs at the middle school through community college level looking for repertoire with genuine rhythmic and cultural energy. This works especially well for directors seeking a secular piece with built-in choreographic potential and instrumental accompaniment options.

How to get the most out of it

  • Engage the recorded accompaniment early in rehearsal to establish the rhythmic foundation; the percussion and rhythmic drive of the arrangement will anchor your singers' precision.
  • Treat the Spanish pronunciation as a rehearsal priority from day one, even if your students are unfamiliar with the language. Lantz's text setting rewards clear articulation and authentic vowel sound.
  • Layer the movement and staging cues gradually as your singers gain confidence with notes and rhythms; this prevents cognitive overload while building the full theatrical arc toward performance.
  • Consider splitting rehearsals between vocal-only sessions and full staging runs so singers develop secure part independence before coordinating with physical movement.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener or second piece to energize your audience and establish momentum early. It pairs naturally with other world-music influenced repertoire or works beautifully as a standalone cultural highlight in a mixed concert, giving your singers a genuine performance vehicle rather than filler.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision and syncopation in Latin-influenced meters
  • Spanish diction and pronunciation
  • Coordination of vocal line with choreographed movement
  • Ensemble balance with instrumental accompaniment
  • Cultural context and performance authenticity in world music styles
