About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James Ployhar has established himself as a prolific voice in music education through more than 800 published works and decades of classroom experience. Beyond his 19 years teaching in public schools, he developed the Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music and adopted internationally, including throughout Norway where it has been translated into the local language. His studies in composition and orchestration with masters including Knud Havalda of the Danish Royal Philharmonic have informed a body of work performed across Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim.

Plyohar's contributions to the field have been recognized with the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Valley City State University. He has served as a clinician and conductor across the United States, Canada, and Europe, and holds academic credentials including a BS from Valley City State University, an MA from Northern Colorado University, and graduate study at California State University-Long Beach.

Why we love this

This book cuts through the chaos of rehearsal warm-up by giving your tuba section a structured, efficient path to playing with focus and precision from the first note. Ployhar's three-part design (tune-up, key preparation, rhythm preparation) acknowledges that bass players need specific preparation to lock into intonation and feel confident with the harmonic foundation, rather than generic long tones. The inclusion of ear training and harmonic study means your tuba section builds the listening skills they need to support the entire band effectively.

What to expect

Organized and purposeful. The book guides you through deliberate steps that warm your embouchure and ears rather than asking you to improvise or repeat random exercises. As you progress through the three sections, you develop confidence in your ability to lock into pitch and hold a steady foundation, which transforms how you experience rehearsal.

Who it's for

Tuba players in concert band programs who need systematic preparation to build intonation control, rhythmic accuracy, and harmonic awareness. This book serves both students new to structured warm-up routines and experienced players seeking focused technical work that strengthens their role as the band's harmonic and rhythmic anchor.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start each rehearsal with the tune-up section to establish consistent pitch and breathing patterns across the tuba section before moving to full-band work.
  • Use the key preparation exercises to familiarize players with the tonality of the piece you're learning that day; this accelerates music reading and reduces the need for repetitive drilling.
  • Direct students to the harmony and ear training pages at the start of the week so they understand the chordal context of the rhythms and exercises they'll tackle in subsequent rehearsals.
  • Have individual players work through the rhythm preparation section during practice time, then spot-check accuracy during sectional rehearsals to catch common timing issues before they embed in the full band.

How to use it

Reserve the first 5-10 minutes of each rehearsal for the tune-up and warm-up section, then rotate through the key preparation exercises based on the week's repertoire. The rhythm preparation and ear training work best as independent study assignments that students complete before sectionals, ensuring they arrive ready to apply those skills to actual arrangements.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone control and intonation matching within the tuba section
  • Reading and executing rhythmic patterns across multiple meters and subdivisions
  • Understanding harmonic function and chord construction as applied to band literature
  • Developing active listening skills to recognize pitch relationships and tuning discrepancies
  • Sight-reading facility in commonly used concert band keys
