Why we love this

This book tackles the real logistics of rehearsal preparation by organizing warm-ups, intonation work, and rhythmic foundations into three connected sections rather than scattering them across multiple resources. Directors appreciate how it reduces the cognitive load of lesson planning while maintaining systematic progress. The inclusion of harmony and ear training pages alongside the technical work creates a cohesive approach that addresses both instrumental mechanics and musicianship simultaneously.

What to expect

The progression from basic tune-up through systematic key and rhythm work creates a sense of building confidence and control. Players experience how methodical preparation removes uncertainty and allows them to enter full rehearsals with their instrument already balanced and their rhythmic security established.

Who it's for

This book serves B-flat trumpet and cornet players in concert bands who need a structured, comprehensive warm-up and technical foundation program. It works equally well for high school ensemble players building fundamentals and adult community band members returning to the instrument.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the tune-up section at a steady, comfortable tempo before moving into more demanding material; rushing this foundation defeats the purpose of systematic preparation.
  • Use the key preparation exercises to identify which tonalities give your section the most difficulty, then return to those specific pages during subsequent rehearsals.
  • Approach the rhythm preparation pages methodically, isolating problematic patterns and reviewing them in isolation before integrating them into full ensemble contexts.
  • Reference the harmony and ear training pages when sectionals reveal tuning or blend issues; connecting visual understanding to aural feedback strengthens both skills.

How to use it

Deploy this as your standing rehearsal opener for the entire season, allowing students to develop familiarity with the material while building consistency in warm-up routines. Its modular structure means you can emphasize different sections depending on what your ensemble needs most; early in the year, prioritize tune-up and key preparation; later, shift focus to rhythm preparation as repertoire complexity increases.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone production and breath support
  • Intonation stability across the harmonic series
  • Major and minor key signatures and tonality
  • Interval recognition and tuning by ear
  • Complex rhythmic patterns including syncopation and subdivisions
  • Harmonic thinking and chord function awareness
