More about this title

About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has shaped music education through over 800 published compositions and instructional works. His Contemporary Band Course, now distributed by Alfred Music, serves as a foundational text in schools across the United States and has been adopted internationally in Norway, France, and beyond. He studied composition at California State University–Long Beach under Morris Hutchings Ruger and earned degrees from Valley City State University and Northern Colorado University.

Plyohar's career spans two decades of public school teaching alongside extensive work as a clinician and conductor at universities and workshops throughout North America and Europe. His orchestration expertise developed through collaboration with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and his concert music has been performed internationally and broadcast on network television. He is a recipient of the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and serves as a member of the American Bandmasters Association.

Why we love this

This book solves a real structural problem: most rehearsals jump into repertoire without systematic preparation, wasting time and frustrating students. Ployhar's three-part framework (tune up, key preparation, rhythm preparation) builds instrumental readiness in a logical sequence, so players arrive at your music genuinely ready to focus on artistry rather than mechanics. The addition of harmony and ear training pages means you're developing musicianship in parallel with technical facility.

What to expect

Opening this book feels like stepping into a carefully mapped practice space. The organization invites focused work: you know exactly what you're doing and why, whether you're loosening your embouchure, learning a new key signature, or syncing your rhythm with the ensemble's pulse.

Who it's for

Alto saxophonists in concert band settings at the middle school and early high school levels will find this book invaluable for independent and sectional practice. Directors seeking a systematic warm-up and skill-building program that reduces rehearsal scattered-ness and builds player independence will appreciate the structured, three-part approach.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start each rehearsal with the tune up section rather than treating it as optional; consistency in warm-up routine pays immediate dividends in intonation and ensemble blend.
  • Rotate through the key preparation exercises based on the keys you're using in that week's repertoire, so saxophone students understand the harmonic landscape before encountering it in their concert music.
  • Use the rhythm preparation patterns to address specific rhythmic challenges emerging in your band's current pieces; these exercises provide isolated, focused drill without feeling disconnected from musical purpose.
  • Pair the harmony and ear training pages with your full ensemble work by having saxophones vocalize chord tones, strengthening their harmonic awareness within the context of your actual repertoire.

How to use it

Use this as your standard rehearsal opening routine, rotating sections across the week so your saxophone section consistently arrives at full-band call with solid technical footing. The key preparation section works especially well when introduced a week or two before your band encounters that key in concert music, giving students a head start on intonation and fingering patterns.

Skills your students will build

  • Systematic embouchure and tone development through structured warm-ups
  • Facility in multiple key signatures (major and minor)
  • Rhythmic precision and independence in reading mixed meters and syncopation
  • Harmonic understanding and chord tone recognition
  • Ear training and listening skills for intonation and blend
