Why we love this

This book cuts through the vague notion of 'warm-up time' by offering a structured, three-part system that actually reduces rehearsal chaos rather than adding to it. Ployhar's decades of teaching experience shine through in the logical progression from tuning fundamentals to key preparation to rhythm work, meaning your ensemble builds competency and confidence without wasting precious minutes on unfocused noodling. The inclusion of harmony and ear training pages transforms routine preparation into genuine musicianship development.

What to expect

Opening this book feels like having a patient tutor in the room. Each section builds logically on the last, so players experience small wins in tuning, key fluency, and rhythmic accuracy that accumulate into real confidence. The work feels purposeful rather than repetitive.

Who it's for

Trombone players in concert band settings who need systematic preparation without guesswork. Whether you're leading an experienced ensemble or building fundamentals with a younger group, this book gives trombonists the targeted warm-up and skill-building structure that makes rehearsal time count.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start each rehearsal with the tune-up exercises in the order presented; the sequence builds muscle memory and intonation habits that carry through your full warm-up.
  • Use the key preparation section to preview or reinforce tonalities in repertoire you're currently rehearsing.
  • Work through rhythm preparation exercises as a full section, not individually, to lock ensemble precision before you tackle the pieces themselves.
  • Assign the harmony and ear training pages as individual study between rehearsals so that section work on exercises and chorales moves faster.

How to use it

Use this as your rehearsal bible from the first day of the year through your final concert. The tune-up section anchors every rehearsal regardless of what piece you're learning; the key and rhythm preparation pages pivot to match whatever repertoire is on the stand that week. Directors working with mixed-ability sections will find that 5-10 minutes with this book each day pays dividends in faster learning and cleaner ensemble sound.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone control and intonation stability
  • Reading and playing in multiple keys
  • Rhythmic accuracy across simple and complex meters
  • Harmonic awareness and voice-leading sensitivity
  • Ear training through melodic and harmonic dictation
