More about this title

About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has established himself as a prolific voice in music education with more than 800 published compositions to his name. His authorship of the Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music and translated into French and Norwegian, demonstrates the reach and staying power of his pedagogical work. Beyond composition, Ployhar studied orchestration with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, bringing European craft into his American educational materials. His music has been broadcast on network television and performed across Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim.

With nearly two decades of high school teaching experience alongside extensive clinical work at the college and university level, Ployhar understands both the classroom rehearsal and the concert stage. He holds degrees from Valley City State University and Northern Colorado University, with graduate study in composition at California State University-Long Beach. His contributions to band education earned him the National Band Association Citation of Excellence, and he has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by his undergraduate institution. He maintains membership in the American Bandmasters Association and has conducted and clinicked throughout the United States, Canada, Norway, Germany, and England.

Why we love this

Ployhar and Zepp have created a drum book that functions as a genuine rehearsal tool rather than a generic exercise collection. The three-part architecture (tune up/warm up, key preparation, and rhythm preparation) gives percussionists targeted work that directly supports the concert band's overall readiness. Including harmony and ear training pages makes drummers active participants in tuning and intonation, not just timekeepers.

What to expect

Focused and purposeful. Rather than scattered exercises, this book offers structure: warm up flows into key work, which connects to rhythm challenges tied to real repertoire. Drummers feel the logic of preparation and see how each section supports ensemble cohesion.

Who it's for

Concert band directors and percussion instructors who want to include drummers in systematic, comprehensive rehearsal preparation. Drummers at the middle school and early high school level will find clear progressions that build technique and musical understanding alongside the rest of the ensemble.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the tune up/warm up section at the start of every rehearsal to establish consistent sound and focus before the ensemble tackles new repertoire.
  • Coordinate the key preparation exercises with your band's current concert literature so drummers understand how these patterns appear in actual pieces.
  • Use the rhythm preparation drills to isolate complex meter changes or syncopation before the full ensemble hears them.
  • Draw on the harmony and ear training pages to develop drummers' ability to hear chord changes and harmonic movement, deepening their musicality beyond rhythm alone.

How to use it

Open every rehearsal with the tune up/warm up section to establish your percussion section's consistency and confidence. Rotate through key preparation and rhythm drills that align with your concert band's current music, ensuring drummers develop skills that transfer directly to performance.

Skills your students will build

  • Consistent mallet and stick control across dynamic ranges
  • Key-specific rudiment patterns and their musical application
  • Rhythm accuracy in syncopated and mixed-meter contexts
  • Harmonic awareness and listening for chord progressions
  • Ensemble blend and intonation as percussionists
  • Sight-reading of band-style percussion parts
