His contributions to music education have been recognized with the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Valley City State University. He holds degrees from Valley City State University and Northern Colorado University, with additional graduate study in composition at California State University-Long Beach.

Why we love this

This book delivers practical structure to rehearsal time when baritone players need focused, efficient preparation. Rather than piecing together exercises from multiple sources, you have a cohesive program that systematically addresses tuning, key center recognition, rhythmic precision, and ensemble balance all in one resource. Baritone players often occupy a bridge role between upper brass and lower brass, and this book's three-part approach helps them find their precise intonation and harmonic placement within the ensemble.

What to expect

Structured and purposeful. Each page builds on the last, moving from basic tuning stability through key center awareness to rhythmic command. The three-part framework removes guesswork from preparation, replacing it with clear, achievable goals that translate directly into better rehearsal performance.

Who it's for

Baritone players in concert band programs who need systematic foundational work outside of daily repertoire study. This book serves both high school players building fundamental skills and adult community band members seeking focused, efficient warm-up and skill-building material.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start each rehearsal with the tune-up and warm-up section to establish a consistent pitch reference across the section before moving to full band repertoire.
  • Use the key preparation exercises as a preliminary step before sight-reading new band music; this targeted work reduces the intonation fumbling that slows down first readings.
  • Work through the rhythm preparation drills as part of your individual practice routine to build confidence with syncopation and mixed meters you'll encounter in concert band literature.
  • Return to the harmony and ear training pages periodically to reinforce your sense of where the baritone sits harmonically within the chord; this knowledge transfers immediately to better blend and balance in rehearsal.

How to use it

Assign this as the baritone section's private study material throughout the concert season, starting with the tune-up and warm-up section at the beginning of rehearsals to establish sectional cohesion. Integrate the key preparation section strategically before introducing band pieces in less familiar keys, and use the rhythm drills to prepare for passages in your concert repertoire that demand precision.

Skills your students will build

  • Consistent pitch production and intonation stability across the instrument's range
  • Recognition of key centers and harmonic function within different tonalities
  • Execution of complex rhythmic patterns including syncopation and mixed meters
  • Harmonic awareness and aural recognition of chord quality and voice leading
  • Sectional blend and balance through targeted ensemble coordination exercises
