Why we love this

This book cuts through the clutter of disconnected warm-up routines by organizing every minute of rehearsal preparation into a logical sequence that actually builds on itself. Baritone players get targeted exercises that address the specific technical challenges of their instrument while reinforcing the harmonic and rhythmic foundations the whole band needs, making individual practice directly relevant to ensemble success.

What to expect

Structured and purposeful. Unlike random exercises, this three-part approach creates a clear pathway through warm-up, tonality, and rhythmic precision, so players feel prepared rather than scrambling. The inclusion of harmony training lifts the baritone's role beyond note-reading into genuine musicality.

Who it's for

Baritone players in concert band settings who need systematic, instrument-specific preparation. This book serves both students building foundational technique and experienced players maintaining consistency across multiple rehearsals and performance seasons.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start each rehearsal by working through the tune-up section in order; the progression is designed to gradually prepare the embouchure and intonation before tackling more demanding material.
  • Use the harmony and ear training pages regularly, not as standalone exercises, but as reference tools when you encounter the related chorales and progressions later in the book.
  • Rotate through the key preparation section based on the week's repertoire; if your concert piece is in B-flat, emphasize that key's exercises during the warm-up phase.

How to use it

Deploy this as your band's standard pre-rehearsal routine, allocating 10-15 minutes at the start of each session. The modular design also makes it ideal for sectional rehearsals, giving baritone players independent material to build confidence before full ensemble work.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone control and embouchure stability
  • Sight-reading in all major and minor keys
  • Harmonic awareness and intonation adjustment
  • Rhythmic precision in mixed meters and subdivisions
  • Chord function and harmonic relationships
