James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has published over 800 works and established himself as a defining voice in band education through the Contemporary Band Course, now distributed by Alfred Music and in use internationally including throughout Norway. His compositional training under Morris Hutchings Ruger at California State University–Long Beach informed decades of clinical work and university-level instruction, complemented by more than 19 years directing in public schools.

Plyohar's orchestration expertise developed through collaboration with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and his work has been performed across Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim. He has been recognized with the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and maintains active membership in the American Bandmasters Association.

Why we love this

This book cuts through the noise of rehearsal prep by organizing warm-up work into three logical phases: tuning and breath control, tonal preparation in related keys, and rhythmic readiness. Directors who use it report that the structured approach frees up rehearsal time for actual music-making because players arrive at their first run-through already aligned tonally and rhythmically.

What to expect

Methodical and purposeful. Each exercise has a clear goal: your embouchure firms up, your intonation locks in, your fingers find their intervals. The progression from simple to complex mirrors how a professional musician actually prepares, building muscle memory without boredom.

Who it's for

Horn players in beginning to intermediate concert bands who need structured daily warm-up and foundational technical work. This book serves directors who want their brass section solidly prepared before tackling more demanding repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the tune-up exercises during the first five minutes of rehearsal every day; consistency matters more than length, and your band's intonation will stabilize noticeably within two weeks.
  • Move through the key preparation section in order rather than skipping around; the progression builds confidence in unfamiliar tonalities and trains the ear to anticipate harmonic context.
  • Use the harmony and ear training pages before tackling new chorales from the main repertoire; horn players who understand the harmonic function of their notes play them with better tone and confidence.
  • Rotate which section plays the harmony exercises while others listen; this develops critical listening and reminds players that their role changes piece to piece.

How to use it

Assign the tune-up section as part of the standard rehearsal opener throughout the year; rotate through the key preparation pages to align with upcoming concert repertoire. Use the harmony exercises in the weeks before performing pieces in less familiar keys, so hornists arrive at sectionals already confident in the tonal center.

Skills your students will build

  • Long tone control and embouchure stability
  • Intonation in multiple key centers
  • Interval accuracy through harmonic context
  • Rhythmic precision across simple and compound meters
  • Ear training for chord function and voice leading
